I wanted to make a note on two things brought up way earlier in the thread. Someone said something about feeding chickens moldy food and them being fine. Mold in general isn't necessarily poisonous, but some common molds can make toxins that cause liver damage. Large amounts can kill a bird (or...
No, I didn't think of taking a picture until I got home. If it happens again tomorrow I'll take a picture. But I'm hoping it doesn't happen again...
(This is the scalping thread: https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=587399 )
When I went to let my chicken (14 wk old) out this morning, I noticed pinkish poop where she roosts. There was a dark pink strip running through part of it, and the poop around that was lighter pink. I'm really worried about coccidiosis, I can't really tell the difference between the cocci poop...
The dog crate she's in is right outside the main coop/run area so they can hear each other, and when I let her out for exercise (an hour or so a day) she goes in a run right next to theirs so they are still being exposed to each other - is that enough contact for her to not get lonely?
duck...
I have the same question! I have a small run next to the main run I made for an injured chick, if I double the fence so they can't contact each other through it would that be enough buffer to make the run into a quarantine area?
I'm also probably getting the chicks from the same person I got...
Is it different from the temperature it was before, or is this the first time you've felt the temperature of the bill? Ducks normally have a body temperature that's a lot higher than ours (up to 107 degrees F).
I got two pullets about two weeks ago, and one of them has since been killed. (Story here: https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=587399) The surviving one was attacked too, and the past couple days her wound has looked less gross (it's dry and scabby). My question is, how soon...
Are there any studies comparing lifespan on chickens dyed as chicks compared to ones that aren't? I know some dyes are carcinogens or cause other problems. Food coloring is supposedly safe, but think about how much you're using compared to the chick's body weight. (For comparison, we put it in...
I don't know about spur removal, but it sounds like your rooster needs to be shown who's the boss! There's a lot of ways to make roosters more submissive (some people will straight up fight them), but the way I learned from the person who I got my chickens from is catch the rooster and hold him...
Thanks, everyone. It's reassuring to hear that I've been doing the right thing.

Someone in another thread mentioned a similar wound sounded like an overzealous rooster, and I'm wondering if that's the problem. There's a young bantam in the coop and I'm wondering if he jumped the pullet...
