Hello Everyone. First of all, my concern is not that my new chickens aren't laying yet. I'm impatiently being patient for them to start. Here's my question:
I put 5 spring laying hens with 4 of my older hens from last year. I have seen several smaller eggs, so I know at least some of them...
So I've posted a few picture on this forum asking for gender of a chicken to be identified. Can any of you old pros give me some tips on getting better at this myself. What do you look for and what are some of the more sure fire indicators (other can eggs or crowing, I know those :-)).
Thanks.
What are the chances that the black rooster second from the back is the decendant of the rooster in the far back, same one as at the beginning of this thread.
Also, the two making a get away in the foreground, any guesses on the breed? The back one is starting to fight with the other...
Wow, that's interesting. All the research I've done says Orpingtons are frequently broody. I guess nothing is guarenteed, huh? The lady I got the eggs from says her hens are often broody, so hopefully those genes will transfer along. In another post, I asked about the breed of my rooster and...
I got this egg from a farm with mixed breed chickens. When I expressed interest in buff orpingtons, the lady said she had some eggs that were from her most "pure" orpington hen and rooster. So it is likely not pure-bred, but as close as she could come. Probably should've mentioned that in my...
The legs and feet are yellow and the feet have some feathers. That is actually a legband and it's fine. I keep a really close eye on them now because I had one of the legbands get tight for some reason and cut right into the skin. I felt bad about that, but I didn't think it should be...
I guess frostbite would be possible as I had a hen freeze one toe last winter and it fell off and, thinking back, it does look a little like the roosters toes. Can anyone tell me anything about this breed, is it a keeper? I have only a small pen and will be butchering/culling all but one...
I'm really hoping for a good brooding hen in this one, but the comb is looking a little big and red, plus the tail feathers are growing longer. What do you think?
That's funny, I just posted my first post asking about my rooster, and then I click on this thread and it appears to be the same type of rooster. Good luck finding out, he does look good.
Someone gave me this rooster a while ago and I don't know what breed it is. Any thoughts? The tail feathers are a beautiful green color in the right light.
Also, does anyone know if its possible to "declaw" roosters? Not something I would do, but this rooster has no claws at all, which...
