I am new to all this as well. We have an insulated coop. I opted to go without any light in the coop for warmth. My seven girls are doing very well! I live in southern Maine.
Thank you everyone for your replies. I took the lamp out of the coop and my girls are all doing well. I guess the insulation is doing it's job too, as the water hasn't frozen (yet)!
Hi All,
I have 7 chickens (19 weeks old) - all hardy breeds. I live in Maine. I have an insulated chicken coop with an attached run. The insulation is only in the roof and it is covered so, the girls can't get at it. I've read so much about their combs freezing that when the night time...
Thank you everyone for your suggestions. I haven't let them out yet, but I will soon and I'll let you know how it goes. Irene put a stop to my plans...

Hi,
I have searched the forums, but could not find an answer. My chickens are 10 weeks old - they are getting so big! They have been in their coop and attached run since they were 5 weeks old. I want to let them out of their run (when we are home and watchful). At what age can I let them free...
Hi All,
I have been going through the posts on Diatomaceous Earth, but I can't find how much I should use. I use pine shavings in my coop.
Any advice?

Hi,
My coop is here and my seven 5 weeks old chicks are loving it!
The coop has a floor insert, (see photo - outlined in white) that covers a section that is hardware cloth. Currently, I have the insert in and the floor covered with pine shavings.
My question is: If I were to remove the...
Ok, I have a fan where I am keeping my brooder. We are going through a heat spell. The temp in the brooder is 90. The chicks are 3 weeks old. Is it ok to have the fan blowing directly on the chicks?
The ambient air is actually in the 80s, but the garage gets to 95 during the day until the sun goes down. Then the air temp drops into the 60s so, I use the heat lamp at night.
My coop should be here on Thursday. What do you think of this idea:
I put the brooder in the coop with the brooder...
Hi All
My chicks are two weeks old. They are in a brooder in the garage. I have been using a heat lamp to maintain the temp between 90 - 95. Now the weather his hot and humid (at least for Maine). It is 95 in the garage without the heat lamp. I know I'm supposed to lower heat 5 degrees per...
Hi All,
I bought a 4oz package of Durvet High Performance Poultry Pak (vitamins and electrolyte supplements). The instructions on the package were for an automatic watering system. So, I emailed Durvet and asked them how to dose a small flock using a waterer for chicks. They told me to use one...
So, a couple of questions:
1. I have the brooder in my garage. The garage has three windows so, there is natural light, albeit not dazzling bright. I have a lamp with a regular light bulb in it that I keep on during the day and evening - then I turn it off. I use a red heat lamp in the late...
