I love my marans as well. My roo is fabulous - takes great care of the girls, is very easy to handle, and looks absolutely gorgeous! We get nice big milk-chocolate eggs - not quite as productive as some of my other chickens, but steady and reliable.
I have not observed him picking at his legs at all - no sign of him being bothered by them. So maybe this is his "normal". They just look awefully darn sore to me!

I checked his nether regions and they are definitely red as well. And his cloaca (vent?) is quite crusted. No sign of any wildlife, though. Maybe it is just that time of the year for him...
He is a bit over a year old now.
