    Marans Vs Buckeyes

I have both Buckeyes and Marans (Blue Copper and Black Copper). My Buckeyes are really consistent layers, are very friendly and really hardy. Bonus is they hunt and kill rodents. My Marans are pretty much the opposite and I plan on culling my 18 month old birds soon because they don't produce...

    Sick turkey - trouble walking

Update: Last Monday I decided to put him on Duramycin (tetracycline) in his water. After talking to a friend of mine that is a vet, we decided to do a 14 day round. By Friday he was gobbling again and starting to display. Yesterday he was walking normally again. My friend suspects it was a...

    Sick turkey - trouble walking

UPDATE: Really, there is no update. He seemed to respond favorably at first to the Nutri-drench but now he's very up-and-down (still giving him the Nutri-drench). Some days are definitely better than others. Yesterday he was out in the yard getting around (but still really off balance) but today...

    Sick turkey - trouble walking

We've been unseasonably dry here (it rained yesterday for the first time since December) and we keep all feed inside only feeding a day's worth at a time. Although now that you mention it we recently started giving them a bit of scratch in the afternoon because it has been so cold lately. None...

    Sick turkey - trouble walking

I didn't have time to take a pic before it got dark but I was dismayed to find him in really bad shape when I got home from work. He was finally laying down but in the corner. He wouldn't eat either. I got him up on his feet and he just stood there but still refused to eat. I directly dosed him...

    Sick turkey - trouble walking

Thanks for the link! I'm at work so I'll have to post a photo later. One thing I noticed yesterday is that he's been stomping one of his feet regularly, almost like it's fallen asleep and he's trying to get feeling back in it. He's also not putting all his weight down on that one foot. This leg...

    Sick turkey - trouble walking

No, the yard is clean - nothing fermenting or rotting and we keep everything toxic out of the yard.

    Sick turkey - trouble walking

I have a 4 yo blue slate tom who all of a sudden started having trouble walking - staggering and off balance. One day he was displaying and the next he could barely walk. He's eating and his feces looks normal. He's not laying down at all either. I'm not seeing any obvious injuries either. Any...

Comment by 'rbrink21' in article 'Six Tips On Breaking Your Egg Eater'

I've definitely noticed that a change in diet seems to help. I have an egg eater that was eating all my eggs every day. It stopped when they started having access to the higher protein turkey feed. Of course now that we've separated the turkeys and chickens the egg eating has started again.

Broody at night but not during the day

I've got a blue slate hen that has a rather large clutch of eggs in a dark, isolated corner of our coop. The last couple of days she's been getting on them in the evening and staying on them overnight but then she gets off of them in the morning. When she is on them she hisses and gets defensive...

    Rbrink21s Chicken Coop

Rustic Recycled Chicken Coop Hi! I'm Rachel and I'm a Chicken-aholic! We moved into our house in December 2008. At the time we had 2 hens and 4 small pullets who were all living in a fairly small coop. We needed something bigger and better. We now have 6 hens (my babies are all grown up!) and 5...

    Turkey Hen Laying Down Question

Oh good! That's what I was hoping it would be. Thanks!

    Turkey Hen Laying Down Question

This is our first year raising turkeys. We had three 6 month old blue slate turkey hens. We recently traded one of our hens for a 2 year old Blue Slate tom. We kept him quarantined until we knew he was fine. Now he's with the hens. Our dominant hen isn't a fan of him though and so they avoid...

    Why is my tom spinning?

I have a Blue Slate that we caught doing this with a paper towel in it's beak. Once it realized it was caught on camera it stopped and acted like nothing was going on. I'm pretty sure it was playing.

    My hens won't molt

I've got 14 hens. All of the older hens except my Rhode Island Reds molted last fall (they are the same age as the older girls). My RIRs still refuse to molt and they look absolutely horrible. Besides that they are perfectly normal - eating, pooping, laying, etc. Is there anything I can do to...
