Genetics of coturnix quail egg shell patterns?

I've been looking for information on the genetics of the patterns / colors of coturnix eggs. In my limited experience, each quail seems to lay one "style" egg. I've seen speckled, splats, all white, and heard about all blue. What are the the genetics of the egg shell patterns and colors? Is...

What varieties of coturnix quail will produce sex-linked chicks

I recently saw one of the quail farms advertising sex-linked hatching eggs, where the chicks were sexable by color at birth. Females hatch out Egyptian, and males hatch pharaoh. (The sex-linking is only the first generation). Any idea what color varieties the parent stock would have to be to...

Fix hovabator or get a different (cheap) incubator?

Unfortunately, it's several years old. Otherwise, that's a great idea.

    Quail leg band suggestions please

I put zip ties on my coturnix. I found some small, brightly colored ones at wal-mart last year in the hardware section. I put them on and cut them flush. They didn't seem to mind and after the first day or two the quail ignored them (on themselves and each other).

Fix hovabator or get a different (cheap) incubator?

I have a hovabator 1602n with an added egg turner and fan. I had one poor hatch with it before and one really good hatch. Last time I tried to use it, the temperature spiked to 103 and I didn't get anything from that hatch. I'm trying to decide between getting a temperature controller (like...

Considering getting outside show rabbits, help me decide

I've always wanted to raise an animal I could show and breed. I'm considering rabbits, but I'd prefer it / them to live outside. I live where it is hot in the summer and cold and snowy in the winter. I understand meat rabbits can be raised in these conditions and my chickens do fine. Would a...

Get a male now or add one later?

I'm new to quail and want coturnix quail for eggs and to breed. I'd like to have a male and four females eventually. But since winter is coming up, I won't be hatching until next spring. Would it be better to buy a male and females together or would it be OK to get females now and add a male...

Quail now or wait for spring?

I have finally finished building my quail abode. I'm trying to decide if I should get coturnix quail now or wait for spring. Obviously, now would be great, but I'm not planning on providing artificial lighting and it snows here. From what I've read, if I got adult birds, I'd only have about...

Coturnix quail eggs dried out, is this normal?

i was recently given six coturnix quail eggs to try, so I could make sure I liked the taste before raising quail. As I cracked them to make fried eggs, I saw about half of them had yolks that were pretty much solid instead of liquidy like a chicken egg. It was like they were dried out. I...

How old should a coturnix quail hen be before her eggs are hatched?

How old should a coturnix quail hen be before her eggs are hatched? Does the age of the male matter? I understand that in chickens, it is better to wait until a hen has been laying awhile to hatch her eggs, so the eggs are larger. Is the same true of coturnix quail?

How much ventilation do coturnix quail need in their "coop"

Thanks. I had wondered if it might be too dark in there. I'll add in a window.

How much ventilation do coturnix quail need in their "coop"

I'm new to coturnix / Japanese quail and have been diligently (over) researching. One thing I haven't found the answer to is how much ventilation do quail need? I know chickens in their coops need 1 square foot of ventilation per bird. Is there a similar number for quail? How high above...

Pinless peepers and horizontal nipple waterers

Can hens wearing pinless peepers still use horizontal water nipples? I have a problem hen who hates one of my banties to the point she will chase her, pin her (while she's being submissive), and rip out her neck feathers and tear her comb. I've got them separated now, but want to try the...
