I am having the same trouble with my 6 wk bourbon reds.
I have been climbing the ladder into the trees every night to catch them and put them back in the coop. Will they eventually learn like the chickens or is the only real answer to pen them in and put a roof over them?
The whole point...
Anyone have a guess on this? The only thing i failed to mention is that the turkey are housed right next to the baby chicks. (or were, i just moved them out to their own pen yesterday)
I am thinking about starting a second batch and want to do it right. Could it be something wrong with the...
What everyone is saying regarding adding up your costs is right on. But don't forget (if you are doing it right) you have a vastly superior product to conventional chicken, and if you can help pple to see that they are happy to pay more. At least some of them.
We charge $3/lb for a whole...
I was helping a friend process his 12 cornish crosses and he had three birds with something wrong inside.
They were 9 wks and were weighing out on the big side about 6lbs with a couple up in the 8 lb range. None of the birds were showing any signs of trouble.
We slaughtered, picked...
Just in case anyone is searching the forum in the future and wondered what happened here:
I ended up reducing the feed ration by a third. I also began mixing my 22% protein ration with my 17% ration for my layers. I mixed it at about 2 scoops of 22 for every 1 scoop of 17. I only lost 2...
Hi everyone.
I have some 6 wk old bourbon reds who are getting sick. It starts with a day or two of "alarm" chirps. Then I notice the head starts twisting as if they have a stiff neck for a day or two. The poult then starts to loose coordination. After a week the bird's head is so twisted...
Thanks for the quick and decisive response . . . . so i will cut way back on the feed and see what other arrangements I can make. Should I expect to see a turn around this week or has the damage already been done for this batch?
Hi everybody,
I could use some help in figuring out what I'm doing wrong. We are loosing one or two birds a day out of our batch of 50 cx's.
This is our 3rd year doing this and I have never had this trouble.
All the chickens look healthy, they seem to be eating drinking and moving about...

Thanks for all the responses. Jaku, i actually read your whole post the other day and it was really helpful. I was just looking for some $$ numbers.
My only concern with using a used hot water tank is that most pple get rid of them b/c they are starting to leak. I saw that you...
Hey folks,
We are looking to scale up our pastured operation and I am trying to figure out a good scalder solution.
I am building our Wizbang plucker now and I have read about the Wizbang scadler. I saw that some of you guys have built one. How much did it end up costing you? Has anyone...
So I just confirmed with the town hall that we are not allowed to have chickens. We live in a small town in Western New York that prides itself in its rural roots, yet won't let anyone with less than 7 acres keep chickens.
So, what is the first step I would take if I wanted to put up a fight...
Hey folks,
We are still planning the layout of our coop. It will be 16x8 with windows on all four walls. We are not going to start with a very large (backyard) flock, but wanted to build to accommodate our whims from year to year (I seem to want a couple of every breed that I read about, so...
Do any of you put gravel or rock down close to the coop, so that the area where the chickens hang out the most is a little easier to clean? We are building our coop now and i am trying to decide if it is worth the effort.
