    Sumatra Thread!

    Here in the Pacific Northwest there have not been a great many sumatras shown. Judges have there own views and since I know the judge and he might have missed it that day. There are a couple breeders of large in Vancouver area that have some decent LF.

    Pinched in the back relates to the area from the shoulders to the tail. The back narrows very quickly and you could say it pinches in. This also lends to a narrow tail.     No I did not as all mine are in breeding pens. I am glad you do have some goals and plans for it will take some time to improve that variety. Glad you were out and showing.

    Judging the picture the bird seems to be very pinched in the back and high tailed. Buff is not even. I do say the legs were very yellow as I saw the bird in person.

    Do not worry about the white it will eventually be molted out. The white has been considered very important to a good green sheen.

    Not too many years ago the PNW had some very good American breeders especially in LF RI Red poultry. Times have changed though unfortunately.

    In regard to the vet check certainly would be helpful. Yet if we as breeders and exhibitors were more judiscous in the birds being shown this would not be necessary. If there is a bird of concern go to the show management. If nothing is done pull your birds and get them out. tj

    The sumatra usually do react differently than other mulberry faced fowl. The sun light produces a darkening effect. Most strains today of blacks will exhibit this in largefowl. The blues do at times but some lines who have something else in them to produce blue has not exhibited this darkening...
