Hi, all.
I bought 6 Welsummer and 6 Ameraucana eggs from Inside Yolk through this site, and he very generously sent me 8 of each. I don't have an incubator, I bought the eggs to try to take advantage of Bootsy going broody (again!). She has hatched out someone else's egg before, but I can't...
I wouldn't think the raccoons and possums would be hungry, even in January, because I'm in an urban-suburban area ... lots of trash cans and dumpsters to go diving in. But it sure does look like a coon kill, with the head gone right next to the fence. Not a fox, huh? Whatever killed it, I...

Thanks, DragonFeathers & everyone who responded. There were a lot of feathers, but all pretty much close to where the body was. I've lost chickens before and found nothing but a scattered pile of feathers, no body, and figured that was a hawk. Yes?
Hi, all. Today I lost a smallish hen (a blue araucana) to a predator. The head was missing altogether, and she was ripped open. It happened in broad daylight, next to the back fence of the yard. I live in an urban area, but have a big back yard that backs up to the train tracks, so it's a...
Hi, folks. I'm a city chick with room for 4 more good laying hens. I currently have a silver polish and a black "araucana" but they're not laying any more. But they're nice girls, so at least for the time being they can stay! I also have one roo, a cross between the polish mama and a serama...
*sigh* OK, I get it. I sympathize with her, she's been a real hero. Newbie me would have broken up any less determined broody, trying to make sure she was warm and comfy while she was setting. I moved her from the coop (only one nest -- only two hens!) to a separate cage on the porch, to the...
oh ... weeks? months?
Thanks. I'm just feeling my way along ... somehow I thought she'd start laying again a few days after they hatched out. Oh well. The peeps are worth it
I have a mama hen who hatched out a mini-clutch (3 chicks) a week ago. How soon should I expert her to start laying again? She is being a great mom, by the way.
Thanks
Regina
I finally dug out the Storey book, and am absorbing the info .... one answer, already -- I need to get some chick starter feed. I was thinking that since the grown-ups are getting layer mash now instead of pellets, the little ones wouldn't have any trouble eating it, but now I see that there's...
Crow went broody about 3 weeks ago ... Of course I'd been taking the eggs up till then, but the other hen, Bebop (I only have 2 plus the little roo) laid four more in their one shared nest, which I left for her. At that point I made a separate nest for the broody in a dog kennel, on my porch...
I guess the first thing I did was to set her in her rabbit cage out in the yard where they could walk around her and sniff her out, for a while. Then I made them get back in the Eglu run and let her loose while they were penned. It really hasn't been much drama for them to accept her -- during...
You know, I would LOVE for her to be with her chicken friends, and they get along wonderfully during the day but at night they fight if I try to put her in the Eglu with them. The big hen chases her (besides her there are only one Polish hen and a little Serama roo, who were here before her)...
The little Easter Egger pullet sounds like a telegraph machine. She beeps CONSTANTLY. Like she's reciting War and Peace in Morse Code. It is MADDENING, since she hasn't been admitted to the coop and is actually spending her nights in the kitchen. I'm about to drown the little critter...
