Need to cull-At what age can you tell if a Silkie is Bearded?

I have 12 babies that are 8 weeks old, and 5 of them are starting to develope beards. 7 of them do not appear to have beards. I only have 1 hen out of 6 that is not bearded, and my Roo is beared. Should I give these babies more time, or is it safe to say that these will not be bearded? I need to...

    Managing the heat?

Quote: Love these pictures. I keep folding chairs in the coop, hanging up, and I just unfold a chair to sit with the flock and watch their antics. But I like your chairs, it gives the flock a place to perch and rest too.

    Managing the heat?

Quote: I have been using a mister,(2% humidity, over 100 degree days for 3 weeks now) the tube type you put around the patio. It only wets down the very front of the coop, the entire coop is shaded and ventilated. The flock has the option of leaving the area being misted, but so far, they...

    Rooster sitting?

Quote: I had read that too about the Roo in the grow out pen. I know of a breeder that keeps a Roo in with her babies, she calls him "Grandpa" and the babies pile up on him to keep warm.

silkie hen, and sitting on eggs

I am no expert, but I do raise silkies. Most hens will know what to do. I make sure my hens get out to eat, so I will go as far as placing treats right in the nest box with my hens, and water close by. Some will say to isolate your sitting hen from the rest of the flock, so she has her own water...

Fly Control, anyone find something that works, and is chicken safe?

Well you all have got me sold on the bag trap.We should buy stock in some of these companies. I tried the vanilla trees, they did not seem to work, but the coop sure does smell good. I worry it is not good for the chickens though. Thanks everyone for the great advice!

    Rooster sitting?

I have never seen this before. I have Roo's that will look after the baby chicks, teach them to scratch, and protect them, but never any involvement during incubation. Wouldn't it be wonderful if all the Roo's did this!
