I have 12 babies that are 8 weeks old, and 5 of them are starting to develope beards. 7 of them do not appear to have beards. I only have 1 hen out of 6 that is not bearded, and my Roo is beared. Should I give these babies more time, or is it safe to say that these will not be bearded? I need to...

Love these pictures. I keep folding chairs in the coop, hanging up, and I just unfold a chair to sit with the flock and watch their antics. But I like your chairs, it gives the flock a place to perch and rest too.

I have been using a mister,(2% humidity, over 100 degree days for 3 weeks now) the tube type you put around the patio. It only wets down the very front of the coop, the entire coop is shaded and ventilated. The flock has the option of leaving the area being misted, but so far, they...

Hello Bren! You are well known and respected, so this is an honor for me. And you are here in Texas!
I do go to Granbury every couple of months-so I would not be far from you.
My Roo and Hen are both Lavender spilts. I have been having really bad hatch rates my last two hatches(2 out...
I just hatched my first 6 eggs from my Black/Lavender spilt silkie pair. I understand I can get 25% Lavender chicks, but what colors will the remaining 75% be, and what % of the lavender Gene will these chicks carry, if they are not showing it? Hope someone can help me. Any idea what colors...

Definitely Silkie roos make good daddies But I wonder why mine Polish roo & hen and also Creole English roo & hen will roost in the nesting boxes day & nite. I do have a roosting bar for them, but they insist to roost in the nest most of the time. I've tried covering this area with...

I had read that too about the Roo in the grow out pen. I know of a breeder that keeps a Roo in with her babies, she calls him "Grandpa" and the babies pile up on him to keep warm.
I am no expert, but I do raise silkies. Most hens will know what to do. I make sure my hens get out to eat, so I will go as far as placing treats right in the nest box with my hens, and water close by. Some will say to isolate your sitting hen from the rest of the flock, so she has her own water...
Well you all have got me sold on the bag trap.We should buy stock in some of these companies. I tried the vanilla trees, they did not seem to work, but the coop sure does smell good. I worry it is not good for the chickens though.
Thanks everyone for the great advice!
I have never seen this before. I have Roo's that will look after the baby chicks, teach them to scratch, and protect them, but never any involvement during incubation. Wouldn't it be wonderful if all the Roo's did this!

Thank you for the help. I am sure some of these can work for me. I use DE in the coop(great for drying out poop, keeping flies away, and dust baths for mites&lice, but when the mister is on, it does not work. Will the DE be harmful to the Fly Predators?

Where do you get those? I was just at Tractor supply, they have a plastic container, you fill with attracant, but that was all I saw there. I have an equine & barn spray, but it does not seem to be working either.

Last summer I used the little tree vanilla air fresheners and they kept the coops free of flies. As they aged and had less scent I would spray them with a can of vanilla scent. The best place to buy the tree and aerosol refill is a truck stop, I put one in my truck to stop them coming...

Yes,you are right, I did not have a fly problem until I had to turn the misters on, but it has been 107 here for a week now, and fans are not enough, it is the only way I can keep the flock cool.
I have a 6 month old silkie Roo, he just started to crow, and is starting to mate. Yesterday, when one of my sitting silkie hens left her eggs to have a snack, my Roo sat on her eggs while she took a break. When she returned, without any exchange of conversation, he stepped out, she went back to...
