    Help for Possibly Sick Hen

I have a year old black mix hen who about two weeks ago decided to go into a nesting box in her coop and not leave. I thought she was just broody at first but it's going on 3 weeks now and I noticed she is losing all her hair on her head. Her head is nearly bald but the rest of her feathers...

    Expanding Small Flock

Hi, Had one question about my small Welsummer flock. I have three 18-week old hens and have room in my coop for two more. I'm thinking of adding another couple of hens but am unsure if they will get along with the established hens. Can anyone advise on whether this will be a problem? Would it...

    The Welsummer Thread!!!!

Another Welsummer newbie question: with Fall/Winter coming on I'm wondering about heat for my small (5) Welsummer flock. I live in Virginia and the winters can get pretty cold. I'm attempting to use the deep litter method in their coop so hopefully that will provide some heat. But in general...

How to Teach Chicks to Eat Inside Coop??

Another newbie question for the Welsummer experts out there. Have 7 week chicks. Up to now have been feeding them in the run twice a day but now want to keep the feeder inside the coop permanently to avoid attracting wild animals and to keep it dry. Problem is they don't know it's in there or...

    Welsummer Chicks - What Gender?

OK their combs have developed significantly this past week. Now it's pretty obvious (I think). And the winner is...pinkchick - looks like #1 and #4 are the roos. Which means I'll have to rename them as my kids named them Elizabeth and Sapphire, respectively! I'll post some updated photos...

Newbie here again. think I'm leaning towards putting the two roosters together in a bachelor coop. Would 2 roos get along OK together since they won't be with any hens? skip Front royal, va

    Welsummer Chicks - What Gender?

thanks for the responses! One thing the photos don't show, though, are their relative sizes. The chicks in photos 3 and 5 are are about the same size and are signficantly bigger than the other ones. However, their combs aren't the biggest.

    The Welsummer Thread!!!!

thanks for the responses to my Wellsummer newbie questions. So if I get rid of one rooster, would one rooster for 3 hens still be too much for the hens? Alternately, I could house the 2 roosters separately (would they get along?) or move 1 rooster and 1 hen to a separate coop. Thoughts? Skip...

    The Welsummer Thread!!!!

Greetings! Another new Welsummer fan here. Have 5 6-week chicks (3 hens, 2 roosters...I think). Have a nice roomy 4x6 coop for them and a 4x5 covered run. Some newbie questions: - Is the run (20 sq feet) going to be big enough or should I expand it? I'm thinking of doubling it in size to...

Help Getting Welsummer Chicks in Coop

Wow this is a great forum - never seen so many so eager to help others! I started with the nightlight last night - while they didn't go in on their own they did seem less scared and more settled down once I put them in. If the light works great but hope that eventually they'll learn to do...

Help Getting Welsummer Chicks in Coop

I thought of that but with the temps here in Virginia averaging 100 degrees each day it would be a health hazard I think. If I enter the run at other times they often will fly into the coop so I sort of think they already associate it with safety. Just need to get em to go on their own -...

Help Getting Welsummer Chicks in Coop

I'm also having problems getting my 5 1/2 week Welsummer chicks to go into the coop at night. During the day they stay in the chicken run but at sundown every night I find them huddled in the corner of the run peeping furiously. It seems like they're waiting for me to put them in the coop...
