Silver Laced Cochin Cross, what's your guess?

Ahh looking at pictures of EE roosters, I think you might be spot on. I thought for sure it came out of a brown egg but there were EE eggs in the mix that hatched out too but we sadly lost two chicks early on.

Silver Laced Cochin Cross, what's your guess?

Hey All, We hatched out two babies this summer. One is about 7.5 weeks old and I'm pretty sure it's a cockerel but I'd love confirmation. The other is about 14 weeks old and looks like a black sex link pullet to me. Our roo is a silver laced Cochin. Both chicks hatched out of brown egg layers...

Help me Troubleshoot this High Needs FTT Chick 5 Days Old

Thanks for the guidance. I did decide to cull it, my first time having to do that and it was definitely tough. I feel like it was definitely the best choice and feel relieved that it's no longer suffering.

Help me Troubleshoot this High Needs FTT Chick 5 Days Old

Thanks I have sincerely considered that, I do feel like it's on hospice at this point I'm honestly shocked it's made it this far. At what point do you give up, I know the flock will probably never accept it especially if it's a wonky bird. Do I just stop offering food and water or kindly cull it? 🥺

Help me Troubleshoot this High Needs FTT Chick 5 Days Old

I am new to naturally hatching out chicks and with the addition to the rooster to my flock, I decided to let my broody girls sit. I Had some success with two hens and have hatched out two super healthy birds and a failure to thrive that is still fighting at 5 days. It's got a lot going on and I...

    Cochin sick?

Thanks I was concerned with separating her out in the first place because she's the bottom bird so I will make sure she has a playdate. The coop is cold, we never give supplemental heat to our birds in the coop and we are having a cold snap where I'm at. She's in a dog kennel in our breezeway, I...

    Cochin sick?

Yesterday afternoon her crop felt pliable without excess fluid but I could feel a ropy hard bit in there and this morning she had a perfectly empty and flat crop. I'm hoping she just had an impaction but I'm keeping her separate for observation for now. She's not as irritated by handling either.

    Cochin sick?

Thanks for your reply. I did not take her food and water out last night because she was happily eating and I hadn't ruled out other issues so I wanted to make sure she was well fed and hydrated but I will try that today. I do suspect it to be a crop issue as she's quite irritable when I try to...

    Cochin sick?

Thanks for the reply. Tonight I separated her out in a dog crate in our 3 season room under some heat. I gave her scrambled eggs, her regular feed (they get egg layer pellet and scratch along with vegetable and fruit scraps from the kitchen) along with electrolyte and probiotics in her water...

    Cochin sick?

Hi! I've got a 2 year old Cochin that has been acting out of sorts, it's been a couple of weeks since I've noticed the new behavior and I chalked it up to stress. We recently changed upgraded the coop. She doesn't seem to be adjusting well and I'm worried it might be something else but I don't...

How noisy is your Dark Brahma Roo?

Hey there, I have a 4 month old dark brahma rooster, he hasn't crowed yet but I'm wondering if anyone with experience can tell me how much noise they make. I've read they are on the quieter side. He's also the last bird to the flock and while he's bigger than most of the hens, they still pick on...

    Hey feathered friends👋

Thanks!! It is so interesting watching their personalities bloom and the social dynamics as we add more to the mix. Agreed about the rooster, I'm curious to see how he'll shake things up too. He's still in a separate run but our free ranged hens like to gather around the pen and settle down...

    Hey feathered friends👋

He's really quite sweet so far. I'm hoping because he's the last bird to the flock and our oldest hens are rather dominant, he might just be a gentle (quiet) giant. Our neighbors are very close, the plot sizes are all about a quarter acre but we have two other neighbors on our street with birds...

    Hey feathered friends👋

Hello, thank you! They are allowed however we have a small property surrounded by other residential homes so while our chickens can be noisy at times, I want to be considerate of our neighbors. We'll probably take a wait and see approach, I go back and forth about the pros and cons of keeping him.

    Hey feathered friends👋

I started my backyard chicken journey about three years ago. We started with four birds, 2 RI Reds and 2 black sexed link. Last spring we introduced 8 new birds and this spring 2 more. I now have colorful flock including rhode island red, black star, easter egger, speckled sussex, columbian...
