I finally joined a few days ago. I have used this site for quite some time. I currently have 8 "older" girls and 2 weeks ago, I got 28 babies! I got my older girls as pullets, but this time I wanted to start with chicks. I got an assortment of buff orpingtons, araucanas, silver laced...
Sorry for the loss of your chicken. I know that I'll probably be faced with the same problem along the way, so thanks for the post. I can't put my chickens in the freezer after they stop laying. They will be free range until the end.
I started with 6 Red Stars and since I couldn't tell them a part, I just call them all Reba (as in Reba McIntyre with her red hair)! Then I got 2 Araucanas and named them Gladys and Ida, after my grandmothers!
Just watch for pecking. If you see blood on a chick, switch to a red bulb. The chicks can't see any blood with the red bulb and won't continue to peck that chick.
I also got chicks from McMurray. I was lucky and the p.o. was good about calling me right away. I got 28 on 2/19 and so far they are all doing well. Good luck with your babies!
I am also from N CA and just joined. I got 28 chicks on 2/19 and they are all doing well. I got a mix of Araucanas, Buff Orpingtons, Silver Laced Wyandottes, Cuckoo Marans, and Black and Red Stars. I am enjoying seeing them grow and see their personalities develop!
They should be placed on the bottom and the bucket hung at the appropriate height for the birds to reach up to the nipples. Then the water will drip in to their beak.
