Ah ha!! Oh yes, he is all-rooster! Of course everyone was right.
He crowed! And crowed and crowed. Over and over again, like a dinner chime. He just discovered his voice.
Luckily my husband and I were both outside, both near the barn, and heard it - HIM- loud and clear.
But what does my...
We got them all on May 8. But the 'Americaunas' (or E.Eggers) were bigger than the Wyandottes and the feed store owner said they were probably a week or more older, not newly hatched.
So 'she' is probably 17 weeks at least. Maybe even 18.
I just thought she would have crowed by now.
She did...
Thank you guys for the help, and really nice graphic of combs.
I knew it!
Well, although I'm secretly happy, all that keeps going through my head now is, "Just wait till my husband gets home..."
He did NOT want a cockerel.
I'm thinking the girls will be safer free ranging.
My son named...
I'm at a loss!
We got 8 chicks from the local feed store in May, got there too late in the day for R.I. Reds and Orpingtons, so were happy to take some Wyandottes and Americaunas, which were all that was left in a big bin.
They were all said to be females.
The Wyandottes are a sweet...
Thank you so much everyone for great advice. Wish we had been lucky enough to get the shy types. I'll miss my once-sweet Orpington roo
but it's for the best we think to find them both a new home asap.
We have two roos almost 5 months old. They are buddies and roost together, seem to get along. Barely fight and it's not aggressive really. 9 pullets hang out with them. They have a large indoor pen in a barn and can roam out in a large run. We also free range them daily.
Well I guess the...
Oh my gosh, that is so sweet. I'm in love with Oliver!
Our rooster stayed close to a post the day that one of our guinea fowl smacked into it and broke her poor dumb neck. I don't know if he was hoping she would come back to life (it was only his loitering that led us to her whereabouts) or...
Poor freaked out things...
I sent my husband out the other day to shake out the hallway runner. About 16 feet of red rug flapping violently outside, and the poor hens, roos and guinea spazzed and fled to the hills. Hours later at dusk, they still wouldn't come out for treats. I had to climb...
Oh wow, I had no idea it was possible, thank you for the link!
I've seen the dominant roo mount pretty much all the guineas - oh, why do I always get the weird ones?!
My (2) roos and all girls are 3 1/2 months. The roos seem to pay attention only to the 5 Guinea, running with and around them as if herding. The Guinea in turn follow them everywhere and make a racket if separated. They pester the pullets if they come too close.
Meanwhile the roos utterly...
Naturally they all made fools out of me. Yes, they perked up all right. Pecking and scratching all over the planet about 10 minutes after I posted my concerns. They're growing fast, but they're still so young, so I worry about them.
My chickens and guinea fowl are only 9 weeks old.
It has been unseasonably hot here for so long (80s/90s) and they were all doing great. Then suddenly the temperature dropped (today it is high 50s) and they're acting odd.
They are standing around in a loose circle eyeing me, quiet little...
Oh do I feel a little silly. I just didn't think the guy would be so mature already! Well, he is quite sure of himself. Now I'm wondering if I should get a male guinea or two. Today they seem to have settled down a bit, getting along again. Thanks!
I heard it was the other way around! - that guinea bother roosters, and hens. I have been raising this smallish flock since they were about a week or two old. Turns out I have two baby roos/ cockerels. 9 pullets. 6 guinea fowl.
They are all about 7 weeks old.
Just yesterday the Rhode...
