    New babies!!!!

So after a tough fall and even tougher winter of losing some hens and young silkies, one of our silkies babies from last year turned out to be a Roo. On top of that today we discovered two peeps under our Plymouth Rock!!!! Apparently our little man has been busy!!!! So exciting as was...

Only black silkies sick and dying

Thanks for the info. It's so odd that it is only the black silkies. I have had no issues with anyone else at all. Very frustrating. The last few that have died did so quickly. Little to no symptoms at all. By the time there eyes start bubbling they are dead within hours. I have been watching the...

    Sickly black silkies

This year I have had no luck with black silkies. I got a handful from 2 different farms and one batch who I got at about 20weeks old started to die off about 2 months ago. Symptoms were generally the same: swollen eyes, little nasal discharge and raspy sounding. They typically develop quickly...

Only black silkies sick and dying

So as many know, I have not had much luck with my black silkies lately. I have had 5 now die. Symptoms have all been generally the same. Swollen eyes with cottage cheese like substance coming out of their eyes, listless, sometimes sneezing, watery eyes and noses. Generally by the time I notice...

Ended Official BYC Contest: Worst Chicken Molt Pictures, Fall-Winter 2013

Ok here is one of my crosses molting forever. I have 4 that look like this. Lol. On closer inspection my NHs look pretty bad too and my RIRs are losing their tails.

Thank you all. Since June we have expanded to 54 hens and one little rose comb rooster we named Hef!!!! So fascinating and terribly addicting!!! Love them all though

Ended Official BYC Contest: Worst Chicken Molt Pictures, Fall-Winter 2013

Awe!!! Most of mine are doing alright at the moment as you can see but most are just at or under a year old too. Will have to see more pics as they start to molt. Although I do have 4 leghorn- RIR crosses who have looked awful since August. Will have to find a good picture of them.

    Silkies with swollen eyes

Thanks. I am trying. This was the first major procedure I have tried and this site and you all have been instrumental in trying to be successful. It's was really strange trying to get this stuff out but once I did and seeing her improve so quickly is a huge relief. Hopefully by morning I will...

    Silkies with swollen eyes

Thank you all so very much. After this last round if cleaning and going back over the signs and symptoms you all have sent here is where we are at. There appears to be no scabs forming anywhere and for the moment their mouths and throats are still clean and clear. They are drinking and eating...

    Silkies with swollen eyes

I will check them. The only thing I have really noticed is their feathers around their neck and under wings are tough from what appears to be oozing from their eyes. Primarily where they stick their head when they are sleeping. They are troopers though. Still eating and drinking pretty well and...

    Silkies with swollen eyes

I think all I have in my kit is tetracycline but will have to look to be sure. I am not opposed to using antibiotics just wanted to be sure first. I have been my own worst enemy with multiple infections and antibiotics so I tend to be a bit cautious. Thanks again for all the support...

    Silkies with swollen eyes

Thank you all for your words of support. They look a little better today. One more so than the other. While cleaning them up this morning, I noticed one sounds raspy so maybe colds/ respiratory distress?? Both now have fair to good drainage from their swelling at the eye. I put some wet hot...
