if the roo is aggressive toward you then you need to get a tamer one. I had to replace mine due to an injury and simply raised up one of the roo chicks with the flock while they healed their backs. I caught him daily and held him for a couple months and the girls picked on him when he started to...
my hen started limping yesterday and still is today. I checked her foot and it is slightly warm to the touch, (more yesterday) , but she has no discoloration or scabs. She is still eating and hopping around so I put hemmoroid cream on it to reduce the swelling hopefully. Is there anything else...
I have 2 broodies , one is due today and the other in a week. They both started with 4 eggs each and thanks to other hens insisting on laying eggs in their boxes, they each had an egg crushed early on. Today was hatch day for the first one and I got up to find a fully formed dead chick in the...
Pele, this is a bit off topic , but regarding your roses just plant one clove of garlic at the base of the bush near the roots and the aphids should go away. It flavors the plant and they hate it, works for mine.
with my B.A.'s the tail feathers always come in first in the girls, the roos will have almost no tail feathers for a couple weeks after the girls start.
my hen died yesterday , she simply stopped breathing. I am pretty sure that it was internal injuries. My roo has not injured any others and his nails are still blunt so I guess that I will continue to file them as needed and keep a better eye out
He let me carry him into a room and I draped a towel over his head loosely, he then relaxed right into my lap like he was asleep and I gently pulled his leg back one at a time so his foot was bottom side up and he let me do it only mildly pulling away mabey 3 times when the vibrations bothered...
I did Iodine the wound , but I will add some oral antibiotics. I do hatch out my own chicks , in fact she is my first momma and I had to leave her 10 week old babies on their own, but they should be fine. He is actually a sweetheart , he comes to me wanting to be held and pet and he is not mean...
My black austrolorp roo is rough on the dismount and had previously skinned one side of one of my hens. We Iodined her and put a hen apron on and she did fine monitered with the rest of the flock while she healed. I noticed last night that he got another one , only this time he did not skin as...
looks like rooster damage to me, I have 14 hens and 1 roo and still had to put a hen apron on one to let her heal after he skinned her side by accident. I hear that they mellow with age , but I had two roos and they caused alot of stress reclaiming the hens all day .
Thank you all for your answers She was looking up ducks at the same time so I think she got the information confused Big John will be very happy to rule the roost all alone
I had 2 australorp roosters tending to 14 hens. Today my 2nd in command was sent to freezer camp due to biting and eating the crown off of the lead rooster while he was trying to mate the hens , he runs from my lead guy at any other time . My sister says that anything over 12 hens will cause...
I read somewhere on this site that all you need to do is flip them. Grab their feet and hold them upside down until they stop flapping, this can take a few seconds to a couple of minutes. After that you can handle them with no problems for the next several minutes and you have shown dominance. I...
