The Evolution of Atlas: A Breeding (and Chat) Thread

So sorry Cynthia. RIP, Atlas. Thanks to you he had a long happy life. Bless those roosters! Yesterday the temp went from 43 degrees near 3pm and by 3 am it was -6 degrees!!!!!!! And a high of 4 today. The coop was 20 degrees with the heater. All my poor poofy heads, either with a bare spot...

The Evolution of Atlas: A Breeding (and Chat) Thread

With this food aversion I can eat Big Macs, Burritos, soup, chips, veggies, but I made cod and couscous tonight and after 2 bites I felt the gag come on and now my dinner sits on the table. I'll try again later. I went to let the chickens out this afternoon and they made a quick dash for...

    Lethargic, green poop, pale comb...

It's sad I'm sorry. Many times it's the chicken who has something wrong herself. It could have been a cardiac problem or a number of different problems (even pneumonia) that you would not be able to fix for her. Years ago if I really needed to know why a hen died (for the safety of the flock)...

Best to treat the whole flock with antibiotics?

Eggsessive is right. I would have to have one more symptom than just sneezing. IMO I would not be treating anyone unless they are really sick.

Flock not looking too good this winter

Molting? Mine are. They can also get thinner while molting. Hunger. Surely your feeding layer. What I do too is take some layer in a bowl and add hot water.. When it's warm, give it to them, Mine gobble it down thinking it's a treat. I cheat sometimes and add a bit of sugar. I would...

    Frostbite

I have read that those who may get frostbite get vaseline on their comb, and other bare skin.

    Houdan Hangout

I love my Houdans, I had 5, now 3 due to natural circumstances, so ordered 3 more for May. Mine insist on being held every day. There are so many positives with the breed.

    Mystery Illness

Yup like Wyorp Rock said, treat for cocci ASAP

    Bumble foot?

It looks small and benign. I would leave her be and keep an eye on it until it really needs fixing. Bandage only if there's an open wound. Mine had a bumble slightly bigger that that and it just disappeared!

Treating Bumble Foot, what else can I do?

You can soak her foot in warm water with epsom salts to bring that swelling down.. Dawg53 has given you an excellent link. I would soak and clean the foot every day and leave her loose. With the soaking, that should help bring the kernal to the surface, and she can be loose during that...

    HELP BUMBLE FOOT

Yes, I would use ointment and bandaging until those heal up. They are open wounds and need protection. IMO, I would let it all heal before I may have the need to do it again. I would keep soaking daily helping the wounds heal. When it's all healed and if you feel to go in again, what I do is...

    Bumblefoot- week after scab removal

I have done alot of "surgeries" on bumblefoot. I'm glad your vet knew to squeeze the kernal out. Those scabs look like healing. Personally, I bandage if there's an open sore, and wet bandage if something needs to come out. After everything is closed up-like yours, I just put them back in the...
