I re-read your post and the person's above mine... please keep us posted. Now I'm wondering... white ring? feathers backward? hmmmm... I have a mixed mutt thing that I think is a Cochin / Silkie cross... maybe yours is a Silkie / _______ - whatever it is, it is positively Silkie... and darn cute...
Silkie it is! Hatchery birds can be mutts occasionally, so there's no telling what color it'll morph into - but most likely, you'll get a black... I have three black-ish hatchery Silkies right now, and one has a white bottom - didn't have that before... I'm guessing that it's just developing...
mine laid really odd eggs at first too... kinda "practice eggs"- but that one is CUTE! maybe you can stick a pin in each end, blow the (adorable little) yolk out, and hang it up in your house forever! I bet that your hen will normalize pretty soon. I wouldn't worry.
My mother taught me to answer stupid questions with
"who wants to know?"
-- oh and P.S. one of my three boys from same father looks like his great grandfather... bears no resemblance to me or his dad- or his brothers. It opened up discussion on genetics, and as a result, the four of us have...
I looked up Cochin chicks on several different sites... I found something interesting!
here's my verdict:
McMurray Hatchery has a picture of a chick that is the very likeness of my chick - a MOTTLED COCHIN
Mixed with Silkie, this should make for an interesting-ly feathered little critter...
... of course my vote for the best "pet" chickens is Silkies... but may I also add that you have more than two in case something happens to one of them... that way you're not left with one freaking and squawking...all lonely and sad... and no, they're not that much work...and yes, kids &...
thats what mine looks like - but mine has 5 toes like a Silkie! How many toes does yours have? Is yours feather-footed also?
I don't know what mine is either... maybe something "blue"?
mamakelly, would you PM me if you get some answers on yours? I'm stuck on this one.
anyone want to venture a guess at Cochin/Favorelle cross?
this chick is the same size as the Silkie chicks, so whatever it is, it's definetly bantam. It does appear to be very very fluffy... I mean it looks fatter than the Silkies because it's very plush. It doesn't have a Cochin beak, & too...
It's easy. Just do it. All chicks want is to be warm and clean and full. All hens want is to be safe and full.
I keep my babies in a small ferret/rat cage with a heat lamp. Clean pine shavings, medicated chick starter, warm water in the waterer on a brick so they can't kick sawdust and poo...
