    Nite guard

I bought a 4-pack of NIte Guard LED's several weeks ago. So far, no predators have messed with my hens. It could just be the time of year, though. The only predators we've ever faced are raccoons and possum.

Backyard Garden with Backyard Chickens - keeping them out?

Yeah, that makes sense. I have 2 EE's, 1 Barred Rock, and 1 Mutt. I used to have bantams, and they were pretty flighty.

Backyard Garden with Backyard Chickens - keeping them out?

Hi all: I currently have 4 hens free-ranging in the back half of my 1-acre lot. I've recently tilled up a small plot for my wife to do some vegetable gardening. I'd like to put up some fencing to keep the hens out. I realize they can probably fly over whatever fencing I do put up, but I'm...

    CATS! Caught on camera!

LOL It wasn't baited, so they had no reason to go all the way in.

    CATS! Caught on camera!

I checked my wildlife camera the other day, and here's one of the videos: These 2 cats hangout at the vacant mobile home lot. Since I've fortified my coop with pallets, there's no danger of them getting in. But, I can't help but wonder if, prior to that work I did, the cats were the ones...

Low Egg production. Do I need to restrict my flock to a run?

Unfortunately, we've had a raccoon problem these past few weeks, since I first made this thread. We now have only 4 hens remaining. I've fortified the coop, so I don't think anything is gonna get inside to get them. And, the hens won't be spooked enough to poke their head through the coop...

    fattest coon ever

I just set a trap for a raccoon this evening. We lost 3 hens last week, then our rooster some time during the night, last night. Of course, I didn't know it was a raccoon until tonight when I went out to close up the coop. I was walking back towards the house and shined my flashlight over by...

    WHERE'S MY CHICKENS HEAD!!!!!

I found a be-headed hen in my coop yesterday. But, the weird thing is that the bare neck was sticking through the coop fencing so that the "eaten" part was outside the coop. The only reason a bird sticks their head through the fencing is if they're freaked out, trying to evade a predator. I...

Low Egg production. Do I need to restrict my flock to a run?

Hi all: I have 14 hens of various breeds and 1 rooster. Which is keep in the back half of my 1-acre residential lot. It's fenced in the back. I currently let them free range all day long and they coop themselves at night. I'm only getting 1-2 eggs per day and none are molting. Several of...

One Broody Bantam hen and they all stop laying ??

I went through this for a while. 1 broody bantam, then the rest stop or slowed their laying activity. I have 2 nesting boxes, too. Then, the other bantam went broody, so it got bad. Then, I pulled both bantams and put them in an airy cage, so they couldn't keep warm. I left them there for...

    Rooster crowing at night?

While watching the disappointing election results last night, we had the windows open. All of a sudden, my Romeo starts crowing. It was probably 9pm or so. Was he also complaining about the election results, or do roosters do this from time to time?

Do tiny eggs ever get any larger?

I'd have to save these for a while, since she lays maybe one per week. AND, I have to hunt for them, since she hasn't yet found the nesting box. My flock free-ranges in my 1/2-acre fenced backyard, so I do find the occasional egg out in the middle of the yard. haha!

Do tiny eggs ever get any larger?

When we had the "full-blooded" Silkies, before the predators got to 'em, the eggs we got were definitely small, but not near as small as what's in the picture I posted above. I'd say they were 2/3 the size of a golf ball, maybe a little smaller.

Do tiny eggs ever get any larger?

My last remaining Silky/Cochin mix lays these cute little eggs. She's probably 8 months old. Is this as large as they're gonna get?

    Goodbye, Mr Possum...

Thank you! I definitely had a little adrenaline pumping during that. I had my little LED flashlight held alongside the rifle barrel while I was aiming. I went tactical on him. LOL Honestly, I don't know what model Marlin it is. I've had that thing for around 25 years. It's the one with...
