My 3 ducks are happily living with my hens. It's their 3rd night sharing the coop and run and they seem fine. Ducks are 6-7 weeks, hens are years plus. I want to know if the ducks can eat the layer pellets right now or will that make them sick? Do I need a different food until they start laying?
The night temps are still below 50, I was thinking they would snuggle in the hay but decided to keep bringing them in the garage until it warms up more. Thanks for the advice.
They do have water in the run but don't go drink it. I use nipple waterers inside the coop, which they have always used...
I just introduced my ducks to the chicken run today. My 3 khaki Campbells (supposed to be female) are 5 weeks old, and will be living with my 5 assorted breed hens. Yesterday they all free ranged together, I was worried about the duckies, but they were pushing my hens around! Now they are all in...
I did two nights in a row of dipping, then took last night off. Tonight I tried Vaseline, because I thought it would be easier. The Vaseline was less messy, but I felt unsure that I got into all the nooks and crannies of her feet. I tried to do a lot of rubbing, a huge chunk of yuck came off. Is...
Well she seemed to do a bit better yesterday but this morning she died. I did treat her the night before last but I don't think that had anything to do with her death. We have had three deaths over the past 2 years that were similar, we haven't noticed until its too late that something is wrong...
Aww, poor girl. I'd get babies if you can but I guess there's no knowing for sure. The babies might bond and still leave her out. At least she'd be the boss? I've got three silkies and three bigger chickens and the pecking order has changed here and there but one of my silkies takes the brunt of...
One of my hens definitely has scaly leg, I wasn't sure about the rest so I thought I'd treat all to be safe. So far just dipped their legs in oil the last two nights. One of my silkies has since been doing poorly, her breastbone is protruding, so I think the stress of the dips pushed her over...
Well I dipped their legs in oil last night, they weren't too pleased but did fine. I swear my silkie with the really bad case seems better already. The funny-ish thing about it is that my dog thought the oil was a yummy coating so of course broke into the run and licked one of the silkies like a...
I just dipped all my hens in oil ( their legs!), they weren't happy. Tomorrow I'll dust their bodies. Offhand how long before we can eat the eggs after we dust?
Maybe severe scaly leg? None of my other chickens have it, but I did just discover they all have lice. I was going to get a couple of new pulleys today but I guess I should wait. What is the best course of action? How do I know if it's something else with her feet?
Well the last 2 made it and are out in the coop. I kept them in our garage up until they were 3 months, it's so cold here right now I didn't have the heart to put them out! Now the only problem is they won't go up into the henhouse at night, the rest of my chickens go up (1 barred rock and 3...
What I didn't mention was that we did get 2 more from the same batch to replace the ones that died (I KNOW - my 6 year old insisted we try again and I thought well they'll either die at the store or at our house). Anyhow they were fine until today one started looking bad and now is on her way...
We've got 3 silkies, one barred rock, one americauna, and now 2 baby wellsummers and a baby light brahma. We've been doing chickens for just over a year. We've lost a maran and a silver laced wyandotte (don't know why).
Chickens are like potato chips. I want them all. Thank goodness we don't...
We bought 3 chicks from a local feed store yesterday. One died overnight, and another is on her way out tonight. I went back today to get a couple more to replace them and they told me the light went out in that particular tub the night before last and they'd found a bunch dead in there in the...
