I need some insight from more experienced chicken people. Last year we bought a naked nake, hambergs and some ameracaunas from MM and Meyer Hatcheries. We lost 5 of them when they were about 16-20 wks old. All would have similar symptoms and then just die. Start to finish, it would take maybe a...
We bought a natural wormer from Murray McMurray. We don't have any problems, but we did it as a preventative measure. None of our chickens acted like they had worms, so I'm not sure if it would work in your situation, where you know there is a worm problem. Something to look into, and you can...
My children are suppose to take turkeys to the fair in August. We just had 3 attacked by raccoons(obvious footprints around there pen). Turkeys have various injuries but all look like they are going to make it, BUT not to the fair now. If we keep them, Can we eat them this fall, or is there some...
Were your chicks healthy when you got them? Did you have any problems raising them?
The reason I'm asking is that we ordered chicks last year from MM hatchery and the chicks had AE. Some of them seemed sick and wouldn't eat well and died. Some of them acted fine but had toe deformities in the...
Our Russian Orloff Rooster became sick and died. Our hen looks great, in fact she never got sick!. Would like a 1-2yr old if possible. The pair was spangled too. Please let me know if you have something. Thanks.
No ameraucana hens are available at this time, and we just sold both amer. roosters and the seabright is gone too. My son has an incubator and will start hatching chicks in the winter/spring 2009. Last year, we hatched out about 24 chicks, most thankfully were hens. When we start hatching in...
2 purebred Ameracauna Roosters. 1 is almost all black with a few white speckles and both born this last Febuary. the other rooster is multi-colored and is mainly blue. We are asking $5.00 a piece. We also have a Golden Sebright bantam rooster that was born in May, we are asking $3.00 for it...
I had problems just like you. I loved reading about all your success. We were able to save some our chicks from AE too. It wasn't easy. It was very time consuming trying to get everyone to eat and drink several times a day. But I love chickens and couldn't stop myself Congratulations!!
I posted an earlier problem about 2 weeks ago. The chicks I received from MM in the end of February were sick. We sent one of the chicks to MSU for necropsy. The pathologist diagnosed Avian Encephalomyelitis. The necropsy cost $140, and it was worth the piece of mind to know, that was why we...
I would like to respond to Barefoot. After reading your posting again, I feel exactly the way you do. I felt like if I gave enough time and attention to these little ones that I could pull them through. Now I think...pulled them through to be put down another day. Awful. Not what my family expected.
I am no chicken expert, but I have had problems recently with chicks acting ill. I would isolate the ill chick, even if it is in a cardboard box inside your brooder. You definitely don't wanting the rest coming down with it.
If we ever feel like our chicks are ill again, I will immediately put them in isolation. I will not help them to eat and drink every few hours like I did with these chicks. I will instead let nature take its course. I was absolutely crushed to put down our Wyandotte. I had spent so many hours...
