    Broken leg?

Hi Hank, We found a surprise lone chick in our coop this morning. She has the same situation where one leg sticks out behind her. She does move it but doesn’t seem to actually stand on it when it underneath her. How did things work out with your chick? Did you splint it? For how long? I have a...

    calling any one from missouri

What a wonderful piece of folklore. Thanks for sharing. I’ve been considering building a trellis over the gate to our vegetable garden. I will certainly take these tips to heart when I start the project. Then my superstitious inklings can be a rest. 😉

Hitch, This is beautiful! Clearly I am not in your league, but grateful that you are willing to share your ingenious design. My chicken village has evolved over time. It rather looks like it was designed by Sarah Winchester. (Google "Winchester House"). It's not beautiful, but it functions...

    Giving Chicks To Broody Hens

It will break her broody trance but chances are she will abandon the other eggs if they haven't hatched within a day or so. We've twice had hens abandon remaining unhatched eggs within 24 hours after the first chicks hatched. I found that any transfers are best done at night. The coop denizens...

my chickies may have eaten my earring! advice please

I'd be surprised if they actually swallowed it. I've watched my hens peck around the run and they immediately spit out anything that isn't pleasing to their discerning palate. So, assuming most chickens behave similarly, then my vote is that it got dropped in the dirt. I'm curious, so I'll be...

    Pallet coop time!

If you run too close with your schedule you can postpone building your nest boxes. The chicks won't need them until they are four (+/-) months old anyway.

    Pallet coop time!

I'm wondering if you sealed (waterproof/outdoor caulk?) the seams in the underlayment, followed with a brush on sealer would provide enough protection for the sheet linoleum. The edges could then be caulked preventing moisture from above getting underneath the linoleum. As I mentioned before...

    Pallet coop time!

I start with just 2-3 inches of pine shavings on the floor. A layer is added as it is needed. By the time it builds to about six inches deep it's time to shovel it out and clean. Poop trays would be a plus as they can be cleaned off regularly and the floor wouldn't get as nasty. It's on my...

"Entertainment" for 4 week old chicks in brooder...

A roost is a good idea. Do you have shavings on the floor of the coop? Scattering some of their feed over that will encourage scratching behavior and will keep them busy for hours. Add a few small mealworms for them to find and they'll be happy chicks.

    First crow sounds like...a HONK?!?

Ha ha - I know exactly what you're talking about. Ours did the same thing. It takes them a few weeks but eventually, with practice, he'll have a strong healthy crow.

How will you access the coop to clean? We used an old playhouse set upon on concrete pad as our coop. The walls inside are plywood. I painted them with outdoor glossy paint I got free from a neighbor that overbought for his project. That finish has been a godsend as it it easy to scrub down...

    *5 MONTH OLD.....ROOSTER OR PULLET??*

I'm going with 'she'. And she looks exactly like one of the girls in our flock. We hatched some eggs back in January. We have a beautiful white rooster that was purchased as a day old chick from the "exotic breed" cage at the feed store. (I've never determined just what breed he is). The egg...

    Male or Female?

I have been successful using the "feather method" when they are a couple days old. Beyond that I could only be sure when I heard one crow! Good luck.
