Woooo!!! Wow, I went out early this morning to better investigate the crime from last night. As soon as I opened the door there was Chicken Nugget perched on the coop as proud as ever. Maybe minus a few feathers... Man he is one tough son of a gun.. His aggression has always bothered me but I'm...
I'm sure its a coon. I've trapped about 4 and relocated over the last few months. They never seemed to bother the chicks but were in my trash. The first 4 I lost when they were young was to a coon. The only other predators I've seen with my own eyes is opossum. If they are even a predator.. I...
Honestly, they are secure. I've gotten lazy or felt secure myself.. Its been 4 months since I had predator issues so I've been leaving the coop door open. Basically for the last 4 months. Its my fault. They have a secure coop.
I started with 6 chicks in March.. 4 were killed when they were young by predators and before a proper coop. So, its been just 1 hen and 1 rooster for many months. She's been laying and they have been a happy little couple. He was pretty aggresive and I believed he had been keeping any smaller...
Ok, so I tried to get my hen broody a month ago and left eggs in her box. However, she had no interest on sitting on them after she lays. She is up and out and doesn't return until night. I really wanted to add a few more chickens and thought the best way would be to hatch a few. So, I've...
What worries me is that I thought speckled eggs were produced by certain breeds. Or the egg color was kinda personal to each chicken. It bothers me that suddenly after 2 months of solid eggs I have a speckled one.
Well, since my 1 hen started laying she has laid about 1 egg every day for the last 2 months. Occasionally missing a day. Today, she laid her first egg that looked different than the rest. Just wondering if it indicates something.. Like lack of something in her diet, etc.
That brings me to another question.. They free range now during the day. I'd assume they can still do that in the winter with snow on the ground?
Well, I started with what I thought was 6 hens. 4 of them were eaten by predators until I got a proper run worked out. At which time I discovered 1...
Sorry if this question has been answered before.
Its starting to get a little more chilly were I live and the nights are sometimes getting down in to the low forties and upper thirties. For the first time I'm having to consider what to do in the winter months and the next few. I have 1 hen and...
So, usually my chicken and rooster are out of the coop and in the run early in the morning ready to be released to free range. Today, around 11:00am my father came in and said that my chicken just came out of the coop for the first time today and she had been making "noises" all morning. So, I...
I'm not sure if it was him/her or not but its one coon that won't bother them. I'm pretty sure I have their coop predator proof. I was having raccoon problems before having the coop built. He is a big one but I swear, early one morning, I seen one twice this size cruise through my back yard.
Well, I started with 6 chicks figuring a few would die. I only wanted 4 egg layers originally. SInce that time a raccoon has eaten 4 of them. Pulling one of them through a dog crate piece by piece.. And to top it off one of the chicks turned out to be a rooster so now I have 1 hen and 1 rooster...
We are calling it done. I have 2 large doors in the back. Thats the only thing I have left to do is put the hinges on. Tonight they will be screwed in.
