    Feeding scraps to chickens

Apple peels are fine, I always chop up all peels we get. Keep the seeds and the center core of the apple away though. The trace amount of arsenic is on the seeds. Potato skins are perfectly fine as well. If potato has any trace of green on it, cut it out. You shouldn't eat any potato turned...

    Eggs for sale

I sell for $3/dozen here in Kitsap County. I could have easily set the price to $5-6 but I'm only selling some of the surplus what we don't eat or give sometimes free to friends. If I ever save enough to take to a farmers market, I wouldn't sell any less than $5/doz.

Question about things they CANNOT eat

This means the plant, not the tuber/fruit. Our chickens scarf down a chopped tomato with nothing but short of a fight over it. As you shouldn't eat the potato plant or the fruits that some of the species have after flowers, chickens shouldn't either. In fact, you should peel off any green parts...

Question about things they CANNOT eat

The total lack of punctuation's made my head hurt so bad. And I heard ALL of my English teachers screaming and there was red markers all over that post.

    I’m worried I may have a male?!

One of our mail order chicks turned out to be a roo, much to my wife's dismay. As a chick he was always the first one to come check what was on your hand and wanted to be picked up and held. If you didn't pick him up from the brooder he would jump up to the edge and come see me closer. He would...

    Why not spoil them?

I keep feed available in the coop and run at all times. Either layer feed or all flock. In the mornings I usually throw some scratch or mealworms for them when I let them out. My wife got in the habit of giving them a dinnertime meal, usually a sampler of some grated cheese, yogurt, fruits...

    Retrain a hen?

One of my new hens is laying an egg underneath the coop, in the run. I haven't been able to deduct which of the few possible it is yet though. Beautiful chocolate brown egg, so I'd like to catch the one in the act. Hoping this weekend I can spend time supervising. There was 3 or 4 that laid...

    Raising rooster with hens?

When we ordered our second batch of chicks, there was no plan to add a rooster. But one of the chicks turned out to be a roo. Our Sicilian Buttercup, Cici, got a name change to Mr Roo Buttercup. Growing up he was always there to check what's on your hand and wanted to be picked out of the...

Comment by 'Starwise' in article 'Back yard coop and run with electric fence'

Don't be so trusting of the height of the fence. I had 8ft high and had one fly over it before I got the top closed off. Then again, it was Black Sumatra and those suckers are flyers...

    Quick Ramp Question

Especially colder weather flat is better. It lets them hide their feet underneath and keep them warm while sleeping. My girls like flat perches, I ran 1/2" radius on the edges with a router to make it smoother and easier for their claws. But that way they can walk on the perch easier and jumping...

    DOES FERMENTED FEED WORK?

That was the best reading I've done in a while. Great details of the benefits and really the effort is minimal. I will be trying this with my chicks.

    Any math lovers here?

Divide the pentagon into 5 isosceles triangles. Area of each triangle is half the base length (half the side of the pentagon) times the height of the triangle (radius of the pentagon measured to the mid-point of the side). Multiply by 5. 5 x h x b/2
