Sexing black sex links for the first time...

Thanks, and always happy for a friendly hijacking :) Shame we got two boys, after finally getting the bantam boy to work out how to master the standard size Plymouth Rock. She's my son's favourite so I want to keep her. But he only managed to mate her after she had a couple of days in the...

Sexing black sex links for the first time...

Sorry I didn't express that well, I meant that one has a clear spot on the head and white on the wings. The other chick's head spot is so much smaller, so I wasn't sure if that means male too.

Sexing black sex links for the first time...

Just wanted some experienced eyes please. One chick has a clear white spot on the head and white tips on the wings, so clearly male. The other chick has some white but less, so I'm not sure? Plymouth Rock hen, australorp roo

    Chicks getting stuck when hatching

To be honest I hadn't been watching it too closely because it'd been going really well over summer. It kept running about 50% when I added water, so I'd found that without water it was during between 30-40 and that seemed the best way. But now the weather is cooling down I'll need to review...

    Chicks getting stuck when hatching

Interesting about the egg handling possibility. Humidity during lock down has been 60-70%, so I thought that seemed fine. But maybe it was humidity too low days 1-18??

    Chicks getting stuck when hatching

I'll check out that thread, thanks. So could it be humidity too low in days 1-18? Maybe with the change in seasons here I need to add more water.

    Chicks getting stuck when hatching

I've had a couple of chicks recently that have hatched with shell stuck on them, or have fully zipped the top and struggled to get out. It's like the shell has become absolutely glued to them. Is this likely due to humidity or temp?

What went wrong - jelly-like goo left on chick after hatching

The rest are doing really well, thanks

What went wrong - jelly-like goo left on chick after hatching

I didn't get any pictures. Unfortunately the chick didn't make it. I'd cleaned it up and it seemed to be going ok at first, but it just faded over the next couple of days. I think it was malpositioned and had two thirds pipped and got stuck. I think it had been like that for quite some time...

What went wrong - jelly-like goo left on chick after hatching

I had a chick that had thick, jelly-like goo still in its shell and stuck on its body. Orange colour, so I assume it was part of the yolk .... But it wasn't a ball like a whole yolk sac. What might this be, and what might be the cause? The other chicks hatched well. So I'm not sure if this was...

    Is this egg fertile?

Thanks everyone 😊 Yes we had been setting her eggs because the other girls (all bantam, and rooster is bantam) were consistently fertile so we thought we'd see how we go (she is standard). After about 10 clears in the incubator (over a couple of weeks) we went back to cracking them open to...

    Is this egg fertile?

Sorry what do you mean by couple days fertile? Time since laid or fertilised? This was just laid.

    Is this egg fertile?

I just wasn't sure because it has a faint fuzzy ring around but not a clear bold ring
