Hi all,
We successfully raised our first flock of four girls for 2.5 years and they have now gone to that big stock pot in the sky. I'm getting ready for a fresh crop of chicks this spring, but am wondering about needing to disinfect (?) the run.
Our run is a fenced patch of our garden, so...
Thanks for the tip! When I finally let them mingle with each other again, is there a point when I should intervene? Or do I let them just go at each other until they figure it out, regardless of injury?
Hi all,
Last weekend, one of my hens broke part of the top half of her beak off. I think she got it caught in the hardware cloth. As soon as I noticed, I isolated her in our "hospital" coop so the others wouldn't peck at her red, bleeding wound.
She's mending up well, but now, whenever I try...
Hmm, these are some interesting theories. I think the chickens can see fairly well - there are windows on both sides of the coop so a good amount of light comes in and the little lights in the jar are nicely dim. The lights go off after a few hours (awesome little built in timer - love the...
It's just a little string of LED Christmas lights in a jar to put some light in the coop. I didn't start doing it until they had been staying out at night for awhile (it was an attempt to lure them back in at night ). There's nothing else inside the coop - it's built for just the 4 girls I have...
Thanks for the tip! I just don't want to invest any more in the door and it ended up that the service from the company was pretty poor. I have a brinsea chicksafe now and love it!
In the end, I'll be selling mine. It's nice, but with our sun setting at 4:45 p.m. now, and the way my chickens act, the door is closing too early for them, even with the delayed close feature.
Anyone in Ontario interested?
Thanks for the help, everyone!
The coop has lots of light (windows and I put an LED night light in there to help draw them in) and ventilation up high. I followed some advice and cooped them up for 2 full days and nights and for the next 2 nights they went to bed no problem! Tonight's the...
I think I've nurtured a bad habit in my chickens. Temps here are now below freezing every night but for some reason my chickens won't go into their coop at night. They huddle together under the coop in the run and will stay there all night. But if I go into the run to check on them, they all...
My door started malfunctioning recently but I got in touch with Rod from AdorStore and they're shipping me a new circuit board. I appreciated that quick service!
For months, my girls were doing a great job of putting themselves to bed at night in the coop. At dusk, the four of them would mosey up the ramp into the coop, the automatic door would shut, and they'd call it a night.
Now, they've started staying out longer and bedding down for the night...
Hey aart,
We got our first egg yesterday and when I cooked it over easy most of the white was fine and cooked nicely, the yolk all held together, but when we cut into it close to the yolk, a bunch of watery, cloudy fluid ran out. Is that normal? Is it safe to eat?
