my super easy BSF composter setup. It's just an old jug from cat litter, with a hole punched to let excess water from the compost drain, tilted at an angle to let them self-harvest through the wire and into the coop.
I'd put a bunch of soil over the concrete and a bunch of leaves so they can get some fun scratching around and bugs will hide in the leaves for them to eat. They will get a good bit of exercise from happily scratching and make some good compost for you as well.
Well, more grains started floating, and the grains that were floating turned a lot darker, and so did the liquid.
At first I tried to save it by adding some ACV, but it didn't make it smell or look any better.
Then I poured out those floating grains and rinsed the remainder that was still...
whoa, fermented feed meltdown...
everything was going swimmingly, had the wheat seed fermenting with wild yeast for several months, all good, smelled good, then I added some organic layer to the bucket and the very next day it smelled NASTY and spoiled...
what the heck?
We made a BSF composter out of a cat litter jug from Costco. Just took off the lid, punched holes in bottom to let out any excess liquid, leaned it up against the coop for the right angle for the little buggers to self-harvest into the coop.
My question is- if you leave fermented feed for quite a while, should you add some ACV to make sure excessive alcohol is taken care of a certain amount of time before it is fed to chickens? And if so, does that ACV need to be unpasteurized?
The feed in the bucket smells good, like sourdough or...
I did some research, and LAB was the wild yeast that colonized my fermented feed. I had just left buckets of wheat seed out covered in water to soak in order to sprout it later, but I got sick and left it too long... serendipity, it turned out... It is the lactobacillus pellicle on top that is...
Hey, I thought this would be fun. My husband took some pics of some of my girls and ran them through some kinda app on his smartphone that makes them look like manga (Japanese comic book drawing style, sorta)
So I thought I'd put them up and ask you guys in the spirit of the other 'what is that...
