We've been planning on getting chickens since moving to the country about 5 years ago. But there were always other projects that ended up coming first. This summer we finally said, "let's just do it." And we're so glad we did! It's nothing fancy, but we live in the country and the coop isn't...

Coop is done! Big thanks to BYC for all the ideas

Our coop is finally done. (You can see the details on our BYC page). The hens are happy and we're watching for any adjustments we might have to make - but so far so good. Can't tell you all how helpful you've been. Thanks so much!

where to place roosts - too many vents?!

We read the BIG OL' VENTILATION page (thanks Pat!) and made sure we made enough vents and windows for our coop (about 20 sq ft. of just vents). We're planning the roosts and nesting boxes, but now we're running into trouble with all of the windows and vents. Two walls opposite each other have...

Isn't that just like a chicken!

    nesting material

If you are not using them for hatching I'd recommend this: http://www.cutlersupply.com/cart/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=7_102&products_id=682&zenid=02oppf917ncddn5vtpqd46bol0 or this: http://www.bellsouth.com.au/nests/nests.asp We are still in the planning stages of our nest box...

    free floating run in Minnesota?

Thanks for the pictures everyone posted - I'm a visual learner . Once we get the coop done we can weigh the pros and cons of how to do the run. At least we know now that we don't have to dig to China! Thanks for all the input. Will post pics when we get that far.

    free floating run in Minnesota?

In addition I would question the 6' deep recomendations as most post are made 6' or 8' long thus that would leave you with very litlle to work with above ground. Just saying common sense does come into play even when encounter freezing issues that you are combatting. That just seems like crazy...

I've been offered free egg eating hens - should I accept?

Quote: Technically they are from our friend's parents - just acquaintances really, but getting older and wanting to downsize. My friend said they would "probably be willing to give them away" but in getting more details, her parents do want $5 each. They are Welsummer and Wyandotte breeds...

    free floating run in Minnesota?

Called my cty environmental office today and the guy there suggested between 4'-6'. Looked it up online and it says 5.8' for my area. Ugh, that's even deeper than we thought! Hmm, I'd like to go 2' as goldtopper did but the thought of having to redo it doesn't appeal to my busy husband. It's...

    free floating run in Minnesota?

We are planning out our run and anticipating problems with digging post holes because of tree roots. We're thinking of having a free floating run with landscaping timbers or 4x4's for posts. 2x4's along the top and bottom for stability and to hold the hardware cloth firm, as well as hardware...

I've been offered free egg eating hens - should I accept?

Friends of ours want to downsize their flock. They are offering to give us 20 laying hens and because they suspect that some of the chickens might be eating their own eggs, they are free for the taking. (we have no chickens yet - still building coop). Can you break an egg eating habit? Is it...

How do you make hardware cloth/plexiglass windows draft proof?

Hello, My DH and I are new here, posting for the first time to ask a question about windows that we can't seem to find in the forum anywhere. We're from south central Minnesota and it gets quite cold (-20ish) in January. We're converting this small grainery into our coop. As you can see in...
