Thank you, I think that I will separate them (or at least try) tonight because I noticed the other hens got into the box today and layed a couple eggs. I don't want them to add any more eggs, so if I wait until dark, then carefully move the eggs and Ms. Broody over to the cage, complete with...
I have a broody Minorca hen. The last week or so I've been forcing her out of the nest box and then getting the eggs. Last night I didn't collect eggs until around 10 PM and the broody hen was still sitting on them. I was thinking of letting her sit on a day's worth of eggs. I have a silver...
I don't know his actual weight, but he is smaller than his barred rock hens, but larger than my silver spangled hamburg rooster. He is not a really large rooster. Somebody told me he may be part EE but i didn't know anything about his background.
Got him about a year ago and always figured he was a mutt. Then I saw a picture online that looked just like him, but no breed identification.
Can anybody tell me what breed Luke is?
Thanks!
Tom
I'm sure this isn't a new question but I'll throw it out there anyways;
8 days ago my 10 hens (barred rock & orpington) were attacked by a very agressive hawk. The rooster got 7 inside, 3 took a beating. All survived. Until then I was getting 5-6 eggs a day. Now I'm getting 0-1. Of course...
Hi all;
I have two flocks as described below;
Flock A - 19 months old, 11 birds (1 rooster, 5 barred hens, 5 buff orpington hens)
Flock B - 7 months old, 15 birds (1 silver spangled rooster, 11 red stars hens, 3 buff minorca hens)
All summer I've kept flock A in a movable tractor with...
The title tells the story. I have 11 Red Stars that I free range in the afternoons but coop up in the mornings. Last week I put 2 golf balls in the nest box and earlier this week (Tuesday or Wednesday), my first little egg showed up! It was about the size of the golf balls.
Now the problem...
Our baby girl needs to suppliment with a little formula, but she doesn't take much. I hate to throw away the leftover.....
Can I feed it to my chickens? Some of the formula has soy in it (baby hates that, it's all got to go), the other kind doesn't.
I have 10 egg layers (5 Barred Rock, 5...
Hi all,
Just as the title says, my Red Stars are 10 weeks old. Obviously too early to feed layer or uncover the boxes yet...... but, I've heard that Red Stars start laying before some of the breeds I've dealt with before (Barred Rock, Orpington). Should I wait until 18 weeks to feed the...
My longest roost bar is a 2x4, but I put in on edge. Would it be better to put it wide side up? I worried that it would sag (it's 8 feet long) and that the chickens couldn't wrap their feet around it with the wide side up....... on edge they can at least grasp onto the top and 2 sides...
Hi all,
This is making me a bit frustrated - I have 16 chickens in a fresh air coop. Right now they spend their whole day there (plenty of room). They are 8 weeks old. Biggest problem I have is that they won't roost!
First some of them decided to roost by the front door, which is lower than...
