Wow.. you really know your stuff! I really appreciate the info. Sustainably is what my main driving force is for looking for local feed sources, so it appears I will have to do more research. Also @NatJ thanks for the info on soybeans, I was unaware they had to be roasted for animal consumption.
I'm looking into making my own chicken feed and have run into an issue. From what I've read, a mix of 30% corn, 30% wheat, 30% field peas, and 10% combo of oats, flax seed, and various spices to aid in flock health would be sufficient. However, I am having trouble finding field peas sold in my...
I'm looking to give my chickens dewormer, I was at TSC and they told me that Durafend 0.5% pellets will work. On the back they have dosages for turkeys, but not chickens. Is it safe to feed them dosages for turkeys? Or do I have to cut it down? If so, how much? My math works out like this: mix...
Thanks to all for your help. But despite our efforts, my hen, Bella, has passed away. I appreciate the help and information I was given regardless. Thank you.
She is between 8-12 months I think. I didn't raise her as a baby. There is no discharge from her nostril, but a little drool from her mouth it looked like. I live in Michigan and it went from 80 degree weather to 40 degree weather rather quickly within the past 3 weeks. It was very humid a...
I went into my coop and found one of my hens laying on her side. I noticed her being less active the past couple days, but she still came running when I brought out food and acted normal then. Now she's just laying in a ball with her eyes closed. She also wheezes every now and again when she...
That seemed to be the case when I had multiple roosters also. They were more concerned with each other and I never had an act of aggresion. Not long after I got rid of one, the other one got nasty.
You all have been very helpful and I appreciate every bit of advice. I will be more stern with cockerels in the future. I believe that's where I went wrong. Hens are a little more forgiving than roosters lol
I hand raised them from chicks out of straight runs. And I never showed fear to them, I only had the one long enough to see how he turned out. My next rooster I will be more stern with. Not let him get away with curious pecks at my shoes and scoot him out of the way when I walk through
It appears there's a bunch of different ways to handle roosters. It must have a lot to do with the individual bird is what I'm getting from this. Damn, I had 4 roosters to begin with and I kept the wrong one
Thank you very much to all. I think I over handled him when he was a chick. I like to handle the hens a lot because they have always turned out kind and personable for me when doing that. I didn't realize he was rooster at that time. I will be sure of what I am handling next time
I had a flock of 7 hens and 1 rooster, and all was great until a couple months ago. My rooster who was 8-9 months all of a sudden got very aggressive. He began attacking my family members, friends, and he even attacked me sometimes. I tried to work with him, and some days he was better than...
I had a flock of 9, 2 roosters and 7 hens. All was great until the dominant rooster (#1) got severe frost bite and started bleeding all over the place. I separated him from the flock for not even 24 hours and the other rooster (#2) already assumed control of the flock. I tried putting rooster #1...
