Yes, I saw that Paul's Poultry has the Silver Penciled Wyandottes as well as McMurray. I was interested in finding individuals who raise them and talking with them
I would like to find out where there are growers and breeders of Silver Penciled Wyandottes. I currently have Gold Laced and Silver Laced Wyandottes and would like to get some standard Silver Penciled since they originated in this area. We currently have Polled Hereford cattle, Wyandotte and...
Here is a little of our family history, I recently went out to my parent's old chicken house (which is now used for storage), and there is a comercial timer wired right into the electrical panel. That's been there at least 60 years because they had 500 layers in the 1940's, 50's and early '60's.
Here is something that I observed with my chickens in the past week or so (now that the days are getting shorter). I go out around 9, sometimes 10pm to shut their yard door so no preditors can come in. By now, it's completely dark at this time, I switch the lights on and more than 50% of the...
When you purchase new florescent fixtures, be sure that they have an electronic ballast, I have them in my unheated shop and they come on instantly in very cold weather.
Well, I've made my decison, thanks everyone for en-"lightening" me. And yes, it is a personal decision, just like any other decision that a farmer makes. And-- since I personally don't like the short days of winter, I'll be adding light, using a florescent bulb and only adding in the morning...
The 14 hour rule is good to know. I'm in upstate New York so the nights get pretty long.
Next question, any preference from the chickens on whether to use incandescent or florescent lights? Do they care?
Just wondering when you should add supplemental light for a longer day so your chickens will lay all winter. I just had a small producer from the next town stop by yesterday to buy some eggs to resell to her customers because her chickens have slowed down on egg production.
I get up at 5 am and...
You will probably have to go to some shows and look for a breeder of Silver penciled bantams. McMurry does have Silver Penciled Wyandotte Standards and Silver Penciled Rock Bantams--- gee, it's like looking for a car, you can't find exactly what you want! I want to get some Silver Penciled...
Yes, she is probably alright, maybe she had a nightmare! After reading some of the problems that other owner's have, I guess this is pretty minor, along with a cracked egg in a nest on occasion. Thanks for the help and advice!
We have an 18 month old Black Australorp that about every 2 weeks or so will drop a soft shelled (immature) egg at night while she is on the roost. I assume she is sleeping while she does this. At other times she will lay a normal egg in the nesting area. I'm giving them a commercial ground...
I think that you will find that many are sold out for the season on many of the more rare birds (probably where they don't have a lot of breeding stock-- like some of the Wyandottes), but some of the hatcheries sell the common chicks year round.
Well, here is the plan!
We have a small farm and currently raise Polled Herefords, chickens (assorted breeds), market hay, maple syrup and have a small egg market. We currently have Barred Rocks, Buff Orps, Black Australorps, Silver Laced Wyandottes and Gold Laced Wyandottes. The Wyandottes...
I've read through other postings in this catagory and hatchery bashing seems to happen a lot. If it's justified or not, I'm not sure. Some hatcheries are obviously better than others, there is a growing demand for chicks, so someone has to supply them. I've read that some hatcheries buy out...
