Thanks Clinton 78 - I seem to have a peaceful flock for now, which is great.
Then hen in question is actually the smallest of the flock - she's not a great layer - took a little longer to get going and laid a few duds until she got in the swing of it - I believe she's just had her first molt (Im...
I have 4 hens - one Rooster - all together since day 1. One hen and the rooster like a cuddle every day, and seek it our, one hen hates being picked up at all and this is only done if I need to put here in the coop for safety during the day, and the other two will tolerate at their own...
So just an update - after a couple of days free ranging (46 acres - plenty of space for all) and night time isolation for rooster - we had a breakthrough on morning two as he came out of jail he ran into the general run but didn't attack - just watched and went about his business - so due to...
Thanks again for your thoughts. All in flock are 1 year 2 months old and all raised together since hatched. The rooster has always been the head of the flock without any trouble. I am in the Southern Hemisphere so we are in Summer time.
Thanks Barbara I will check her out again in the morning with fresh eyes. Her eyes are bright and she is eating and drinking and foraging - just at a distance from the rooster as he blocks her path! Also wise words with the rooster - always on the ready with him.
Hello,
What are the thoughts on Why is my rooster all of a sudden attacking one of my hens?
1 Rooster 4 Hens, all 1 year old, all been together since they were 1 day old - Leghorn X breeds
Rooster (named GT) is usually quite placid - very happy to have a cuddle with me every day and stays...
Hi - just after some advice regarding skin care for my Rooster - He survived an attack by 2 Wedgetail Eagles yesterday afternoon - very luck boy AND save his girls. A true Hero!!
He has lost a fair amount of plumage over his left leg/rump area and now has a bald patch 10cmx10cm approx. The area...
Chooketeria.com or treadle feeders of some description. Im not a great handy person either and with the moving parts on a treadle feeder it was just easier for me to buy one. However - there are some great designs to try out like the one posted by pdirt.
I had the same trouble with pellets in my...
Hi - a bit of a late reply, but, I had a rooster become aggressive towards me too, and eventually my kids. I read a post on here somewhere that whenever he became aggressive towards you, that you should pick him up and carry him around for a while, do a few chores in the hen house etc. let him...
Hi - no I believe you have to mix it in. The information that I have gathered was to keep grit separate and the hens will then take what they need when they need. This seems to be the case for my girls.
Hi 2Karen22 - my Isa Browns were sleeping on their nesting boxes and I read somewhere that if you go into the coop once they have gone to bed you just pick them up and physically put them on the roost. They are really docile when they are asleep. My son and I did this for just 4 nights in a row...
Hi - very exciting when the eggs start coming. I posted a similar question a few months back. The advice given to me was to just wait as all the hens will develop at a different rate - just like people. And they did just that - I had 2 laying every day, 1 laying every other day and 1 laying...
Just an update - she's laying beautiful, perfect eggs now (for the last 10 days or so) - seems like it was just her little system getting into gear. Thanks for the advice/support
