    My Chickens 16

Current Chickens Lily My bantam Araucana cross. She was sold to me as a full sized purebred Araucana, but I always thought that Araucanas laid coloured eggs, not white ones! When we bought her, she was extremely skittish, having been kept by an old man (who could barely cope) a mile away from...

    Adopting ex battery hens

Tis true, battery hen rescue is big here amongst chicken keepers. The Battery Hen Welfare Trust is the charity that tends to co-ordinate it all, and I have heard that they have trouble keeping up with demand. This is probably mainly due to publicity in magazines, particularly Practical Poultry...

Why do some new members do this??!!!

Quote: Slaughtermen? Sounds like it if they want a horse that cheap and they don't sound like they care if you can ride it or not. Apart from that, is it possible that the newbies posting were in fact the ones who stole the chickens and were just posing as people who "knew" those who stole...

    Sick of rising fuel prices!

Another point, why don't people get smaller cars? A hatchback like this: Is good enough for just about everything - we have one. Shopping, transporting chicken feed, transporting a chicken coop, taking the kids to school and more. The only reason you really need one bigger is if you have 6 or...

    Sick of rising fuel prices!

116.3p a litre here - which is $2.27 Which is £4.40 per US gallon, which is $8.60 I wish we only had to pay $5.64 a gallon!

    Who's Witnessed a Tornado?

I once saw a "funnel cloud" which is like a tornado except it never touched down. We hardly ever get them here, so the local paper ran about 9 solid pages of pictures and analysis about this one cloud

    Chelsea Flower Show

I was watching the TV last night and someone has apparently included a chicken coop in one of the designs The presenter said it cost £3400 ($6800) though . . . and frankly people on here have ones which are just as nice if not nicer.

Gardens, anyone? What are you growing this year?

This year we have two varieties of tomatoes, some sweet peas and some chilli plants. I keep meaning to plant some beans, but revision is getting in the way BIG TIME. On the plus side, we have just finished building a 6x5 foot greenhouse . . . which the chickens are currently inhabiting due...

    I got upgraded! to "Chillin"

    I agree, it sounds a bit wannabe-gangster-ish.

Red Mite! Should I use Ivomec or Panacur directly onto chickens?

It appears that Ivomec is the same as Ivermectin (just different brand names) Could someone give me the dosage for a bantam for Ivomec? We were told the dosage when we only had standard birds, so I would presume that that would be too much for a bantam.

Found a grave on our new property

If you can find out where he was born, then you should be able to find out his parents names from the Parish records. All parishes were legally required to keep records on births and deaths that happened in their area, which I believe started in the 16 or 1700s. Also, www.ancestry.co.uk has a...

Red Mite! Should I use Ivomec or Panacur directly onto chickens?

I haven't been on BYC for a while (stress of school, I am currently in the middle of sitting 10 GCSE exams . . . having 5 is broadly equivalent to a High School Diploma I believe . . . STRESS! Anyway. I went to clean out the chickens and what should I find but they've gone and got red mite at...

    Battery Hens

There's a lot of information on ex-battery hen specific care at www.thehenshouse.co.uk but it is from a UK charity, so they probably won't be able to help with sourcing them.

    Expecting a hurricane

Quote: You sound like someone who is speaking from experience! I've got the chickens in, they're going to be sharing about 1.5m squared of floorspace for the next 36 hours, but they have got some hay and grain to amuse themselves with. Luckily, there's not a lot that could move around bar...

    Expecting a hurricane

Normally we have a temperate climate - not too hot, not too cold - Goldilocks style. But tonight we're expecting winds of 70mph, gusting to 80mph, which is classed as a violent storm / hurricane. The chickens will be staying in the cellar from tonight until Tuesday morning, as the coop roof did...
