I'm sorry I haven't gotten any pictures yet but I inspected one of the hens and it looks to have a tiny black scab that has developed, the other hen does not have a scab and the young chick seems to have recovered from whatever it was she had. So weird it all seemed to develop in the same day...
Here is an article with a short explanation for the recall. I imagine this is primarily a problem if used internally which I only ever used it for a dust bath option for my poultry but still I can't get it anymore and it's probably best to be safe than sorry anyway...
It was the Red Lake Earth brand, I am not sure the reason for the recall, I would need to look it up. So our feed stores are in search of a new suplier
thanks, I didn't realise that the coop would not harbour the parasites, that makes things a lot easier. You are right about the development of resistance to insecticides, I really hope to be able to get DE again, there was a recall from the supplier in our area so hopefully there will be...
I have had experience with Mareks disease in several presentations and I am quite sure it is not that as there is certainly swelling in foot and does not seem to be usual nervous system symptoms, I will try to get some pics. I had wondered about the likelihood of bumblefoot in that many birds...
I should add that they are all free ranging and have plenty of access to natural dust bathing outside but I just don't think it will be managed with being unable to treat the coop efficiently so I would like something, if possible, that I could treat them with on a regular basis without dusting...
yes they have lice and I am taking care of chickens that were brought here from a wildfire evacuation that had terrible scaly mites, they are recovery but are not quite better yet and with the dirt floor of the coop I would need to buy an awful lot of powder to cover the area at $25+tax/bottle...
I have always used DE but now I can't get it anymore so I have been using delousing powder with carbaryl but it is getting expensive and our coop has a dirt floor so treating the coop is almost pointless. I have heard of people using horse wormer in the water for worming, would this work for...
I noticed yesterday that one of my 10 week old chicks was limping and figured she may have been stepped on, it is a little swollen. Then as I was doing my chores I noticed another hen and another...so far 3, 2yr old hens and the chick are limping with swelling in one of their feet. Could this...
Thank you for the info, at this time I only have 3 but hope to hatch more this year, I ended up constructing an aviary/greenhouse and planted forage to simulate free ranging.
Thank you, yes I have taken all measures and read many posts but none seem to describe actually removing the egg when necessary. Many advise to bring her to a vet at this point but this just is not feasible for me so I am trying to do the best I can. Any pointers are welcome, she has been egg...
I have a hen who's been egg bound for days and I have tried everything and still she cannot pass it. It is right at the vent so I can see it, does anyone have advice on how to break the egg?
were you able to help your chicken? mine has been egg bound for days now and I am faced with breaking the egg and would like advice on the best way to do this
