    emu wound care

I wanted to start this thread because I googled this over and over with no luck. And I was one of the unlucky ones to come home from vacation to find one of my emus with a giant wound and of course there were maggots in there as well. So lucky for me I have family and friends experienced in...

    Feeding Emus commercially

We are buying a expensive brand high energy dog food because I have a jack russell mix who needs it too. What I have been doing this week is mixing smaller amounts of the dog food in with the mazuri feed and I think it is working and they are eating more of that instead of the dog food. Since I...

    Feeding Emus commercially

I have tried feeding my three emus layer pellets, rabbit pellets, ratite feeds, cattle feed. They will not eat any of it. The only thing they agree with eating is high protein dog food. I have mixed several different feeds in with the dog food and they just pick out the dog food. I tried mixing...

    Rodney the Rooster

I made the mistake of purchasing 5 white silkie chicks from my local feed mill. They are bantam sized. Only one ended up being a pullet. The other four are roosters. Each one has different stages of puffiness. My puffiest silkie looks like he had someone slap a huge black gob of chewing gum on...

    Blue Copper Marans...help

I agree 1 pullet and 2 roo. I have a blue copper marans rooster, I raised 34 chicks, several different breeds all together. Getting 50/50 mixes I knew I would have some roos in there somewhere. I hand fed them and held them whenever I could do so and I have to say that he is probably second...

    Can Emus free range

I only have three emus, one of them keeps escaping. It usually takes me about a week before she will follow me down to the pasture. The top pasture has the other two and I just try to get her into the back pasture. Anyway the point of this is she pretty much has free range when she has escaped...

    emu taming a teen

Well thanks for the information on the zoogen lab. When I purchased our supposed pair, I am now beginning to feel that I have two females. The guy gave us one because the person boarding that youngster was supposed to come and take it to a new home. The guy who sold us ours was moving to a new...

2 Barred Rock Chicks Pullet or Rooster? 4 week old pics updated

Well the 7 week old pictures, the barred rock with the red comb I feel is definitely a roo. Looking back at all your other pictures this one seemed to have developed a larger red comb than the other rock chick did. Also notice the stance in the picture where the rock and delaware are facing each...

UGH! What is wrong with my rooster?

For me it varies day to day. I have a horrible speckled sussex rooster who will try to attack you through the fence. As they look for a weak spot in their opponents, he waits until I am most vulnerable, when I walk away. I can hear his pounding feet on the dirt running at me. So I quickly turn...

    What Breed Is This?

I feel that it is a speckled sussex rooster as well. I have both breeds and they really do look similar as chicks, but the sussex ends up getting that whitened breast and then the mottled white speckles as they grow.

2 Barred Rock Chicks Pullet or Rooster? 4 week old pics updated

I raised 6 barred rock pullets from a few days old. At the time I did some research to see if there was a way to know for sure. So I read that the smaller yellow head spot meant that it was a pullet while a larger head spot meant a rooster. When I went to the store I hand picked the ones with...

3.5 month old EE. Hen or Roo?

Crowing is a sure sign of a rooster. The saddle feathers are also a sign of one too. Most of the saddle feathers are usually pointier but they seem more rounded on the one shown, doesn't mean it isn't a roo though. All of my roosters are always "squaring off" and practicing to be roos. Actually...

    What breed is Rosie?

Well I have found that trying to trust in the place that my local feed mill orders their chicks from is just very unreliable. I went a bit nuts this year and took home 6 barred rocks, since I purchased 6 they gave me one for free. I picked it out because of a larger head spot. Turned out to be a...

    Is this a Welsummer?

I am leaning towards welsummer but as someone else mentioned, maybe post some more pics in a few more weeks. I thought the brown leghorns has more of a reddish tint to their breast feathers. It looks so much like my welsummer chicks when they were growing.
