How long does it take for a hen to "flush out"?

I have a large flock made up of multiple different breeds, each of which have their respective rooster. I'm looking to quarter them off and breed in the future, as I have ample room for them to enjoy. My main question is how long would it take for the purebred hen to have only the purebred...

Official BYC Poll: What Is Your Least Favorite Thing About Keeping Chickens?

Having birds I raised by hand act like I'm a boogeyman. God almighty, I'll never understand how a bird can go from falling asleep in your hand as a chick to shrieking bloody murder upon being caught.

What did you do with your flock today?

I amused them by spending an hour throwing myself at my mom's two escaped rabbits. Finally got them both caught by hand. The birds were fascinated with the traps, carrots, and romaine hearts littered about in our vain efforts to trap them. One little lionhead we have is too light to trigger a...

    Hen with bubbly eye

yes, separate her immediately. many diseases cause a bubbly eye, the majority, if not all of them, are infectious. i recommend research and antibiotics in some form. if you cant acquire antibiotics, ive had luck with VetRX.

How long does it take for a chicken to lay an egg?

Somewhere in the neck of the woods of around 4-6 months to begin laying, roughly 24 hours between each egg, and usually around 10 minutes to lay an egg. I find a chicken can actually physically lay in a matter of 30 seconds, they just like to sit in there for awhile.

Sweet Cuppa is suffering from lack of gender identity and lineage

I've had cockerels/roosters respect each other, especially if there's a discrepancy in age. Does this one mount any hens yet? If they were to start, that's typically when the bickering begins- in my experience, anyways.

Sweet Cuppa is suffering from lack of gender identity and lineage

I'm inclined to think "she's" a cockerel. The neck feathers and saddle feathers remind me of when one of my "pullets" ended up being a cockerel lol. As for breed, I couldn't tell ya. She/he's cute though.

16 week old pullets unbelievably terrified of me and their cockerel.

Hey there, I just want some advice on how to befriend my birds a bit. I have four 16 week old Buff Orpingtons that are scared of their own shadow. They go absolutely ballistic if I try and approach them and they even are super skittish with their cockerel. They've been through predator attacks...

My buff Orpington chicks at 12 to 13 weeks do I have Hens or roosters?

For reference, here's my 16 week old cockerel Auggie. Edit: Better pic.

My buff Orpington chicks at 12 to 13 weeks do I have Hens or roosters?

17-21 weeks, or when someone crows or not. Yes, you more likely than not would. A cockerel who wasn't distinguishable by now would be an oddity. Yep! That's normal. They're bigger and therefore higher in the hierarchy, making them a bit more bold.

    Adding 1 chicken to flock

I would say yes. I've had hens be pretty damn nasty to younger birds when it comes to who gets on the roosting bar. I'd honestly recommend keeping them separated but able to see each other and not just tossing the poor thing to the wolves. Supervised mingling helps them really get to know each...

My buff Orpington chicks at 12 to 13 weeks do I have Hens or roosters?

Seconded on pullets, I have 4 pullets and a cockerel and the cockerel was very clearly one far before 12 weeks.

    5 week old

Based on what forum this is under, I'm going to say that's likely a pullet/female. I'm not 100% familiar with judging though, just a guess comparing them to my own 5 week old pullets 😅

    Need help! Is this molting?

Have you seen her being picked on by the hens or rooster? If not, it's probably just her molting. If the skin seems red/irritated it could be the rooster, though.

One chick with stubborn poopy butt

I had a few chicks with this problem too... Mine seemed to just eventually grow out of it. I started checking them regularly and wiping/picking it away whenever I saw any and eventually it stopped. Maybe just keep her clean and wait to see if it clears up?
