    Question about Ameraucanas

hi again, Rusty and Cherry must be very nice birds. Ive read that the Ameraucana breed was developed using a whole flock of Easter Eggers and a lot of knowledge about selective breeding. I recommend the book "An Introduction to Color Forms of the Domestic Fowl" by Brian Reeder. You might find...

    Question about Ameraucanas

Hi OP- where'd you get the birds? I agree the rooster isn't brown red. He would need black wingtips to be brown red. Brown-red is a birchen-based variety. Your rooster could actually be either partridge, wheaten, or duckwing. (also has black leakage around the hackle feathers, which indicates...

    Two coops, one run.

Yep exact same thing happened to me. Of course they all wanted to huddle in the little old coop and wanted nothing to do with their brand new $3000 prefab. Lol.

Dostwo lavender chickens always create a lavender chicken?

Thankfully, if a chicken is black, they won't carry the blue gene, so you don't need to worry about splashes. I recommend these youtube videos that explain the difference:

Dostwo lavender chickens always create a lavender chicken?

That sounds like a very fun project. Best of luck to you, and please share pics of your chickens, would love to see them! I googled the lavender chicken varieties and Orpingtin came up. Those are big ones too. I read once that when breeding lavenders it is good to bring in some black genetics...

Dostwo lavender chickens always create a lavender chicken?

Just watch out. That jersey giant is going to contribute yellow skin and brown eggs. Also a single comb genetics. Have you considered that? Feather color and body size isn't the only thing going into the mix, I wonder what breed you're working on? Maybe bigger isn't better. What about another...

Checking-In On Peeps - Post Here To Say Hello!

Hello everyone I missed posting on these forums. So grateful it seems to still be active. Can't wait to join the conversation again. I haven't raised chickens in a while but I plan to get back into it in the next couple years. My favorite breed is Ameraucana. My interests include coop...

    Chick pipped day 18???

He hatched that evening!! No one got shrink wrapped thankfully when I moved everyone off the auto turner. How amazing, to get a surprise early arrival. I think some chicks are just impatient!

    Heat lamp out, 76* ok?

Do you have any way to provide a little heat, say, hot water bottle? Maybe put some hot water in a jug and place it in there just to help them get through? I am afraid they would chill. I have no experience in this happening to my chicks, I hope someone else chimes in.

    Chick pipped day 18???

So he pipped but he just keeps pecking the same hole he already made. He is chirping and poking his beak out over and over. I think I see pale yellow, unabsorbed yolks in the egg still, looks like still absorbing. Will update with any more info!
