First Cull, Didn't go so well

I guess that all of us who love our chickens face the same dilemma. What is the kindest way to euthanase when the time comes? An injection to cause a permanent sleep, of the kind used by vets would seem the easiest emotionally and kindest to the bird, but where would you get it and what dose?

    Rose-Wyandotte Project

An unusual (at least here in Australia)(and pretty in my opinion) feather color has spontaneously appeared in my flock. I call it "rose" because I don't know what else to call it. I'm tempted to try and create a pure breeding line from it, though I know that I could be on a fool's errand. Is...

What are the genetics in this feather pattern please?

I think she's pretty. Her father was the crossbreed Gold Lace Wyandotte shown in my avatar.

What are the genetics in this feather pattern please?

Could anyone please tell me the genetic makeup of this feather pattern? The bird is an absolute mutt and every one of this bird's siblings look completely different. Does this pattern have a name? I cant find any reference to the pattern among pure-breed standards, so would I be right in...

    Walking backwards

Thank you all who have tried to answer my query. I feel a little more enlightened, though I suspect that I’ll never know the cause, be it genetic, or a deficiency, or contracted illness or trauma from hatch. So long as she isn’t in pain or suffering she will have a home in the shed.

    Walking backwards

I don’t believe that I’m seeing the symptoms of wry neck. Has anyone ever seen a bird recover from the backward walk condition?

    Walking backwards

Rusticwool. I’ve considered uthanasia but like your hen, she doesn’t appear to be in pain CindyinSd. I guess that instinct tells me not to breed from her. interesting what you said about genetic inheritance. I’ve never quite believed that it is as simple as Darwin’s theories.

    Walking backwards

One of my hens repeatedly puts its head to the ground and walks backwards for about six paces until it hits something. it appears to be totally involuntary. From what I’ve Googled, it seems to be a condition that can occur in a lot of breeds and other related species. Does anyone know what...

    Avoiding broodiness

I’ve been having a major problem with my birds going broody. I may have found a solution, based on the theory that after laying about fifteen eggs my chooks tend to always go broody. However, if they loose the nest site before they start incubating they go to a new nest site and start the egg...

    What is this mutation?

Thanks for those points of view. My hatch included many of the standard chicken mutations like solid white, buff-Colombian, wheaten, birchen etc. This hen's bright lemon hackles are a mutation type that I personally haven't seen before. I find the colour combinations interesting. But I'm not...

    What is this mutation?

A few months ago my mutt chicken gave birth to 30 chicks. Each and every one was distinctly different. Could someone with an understanding of genetics please explain what the mutation in the photo is called? I've been unable to match the features to anything in the charts of recognised breeds...

    Wyandotte shank colour

Thanks for the comment. Apart from the one yellow shanked bird, I have two pullets that show a hint of yellow in their shanks. Do people who understand genetics better than me think that it might be enough to see a predominance of yellow shanked offspring?

    Wyandotte shank colour

Thanks for your input. obviously it’s not what I hoped to hear.

    Wyandotte shank colour

i’ve Located a leg colour genetics chart. it looks like some of my pullets have green legs and if I breed those to a true bred yellow leg rooster I should get all yellow legged chicks. The chart also also suggests that the white and blue legged pullets should be carrying the yellow leg gene and...
