So the first batch of speckled sussex I got last year were fed a non-medicated non-organic chick starter and i didn't put vitamins in their water and they developed the crooked toes. When I saw that happening, I immediately added the vitamins, but it didn't stop the progress. This year, I fed...
Here are some pictures. These are from the birds that I incubated, so I can't blame it on wire cages. They hatched on a rough sponge insert type surface that was not slippery. They were not born with obviously crooked toes, but they have gradually developed.
I guess they would technically be crooked toes. The most prevalent deformity is that the outer and/or inner toes are curling, but the curl is to the side and not under.
Does anyone have any insight into the crooked and curly toe problem with the speckled sussex? I got 5 chicks from a hatchery last year, and all the birds had curly toes. This year, trying to get some genetic diversity and get away from the toe problem, I got birds from two different hatcheries...
I am also interested in finding some speckled variety birds that are to the SOP. I have a few birds from a hatchery and seeing those gorgeous light sussex, my birds are small and nowhere close. Maybe 3 lbs as adults. Completely disappointing.
I went to the New England poultry congress and...
Hi all,
I am looking to establish a self-sustaining, free ranging, cold-hardy flock in New Hampshire and was wondering if anyone knew of any good breeders of Sussex in the New England area. Any color variety is fine. I am looking specifically for birds that grow to the breed standard of 7lb...
I checked the JM website, and you cannot specify color. I ordered 20 chicks, 21 arrived and made it to processing at 10 weeks. I received mostly Red Bro with one or two obvious tri colors and about 4 yellow.
I am very, very pleased. They were ready at 9 weeks, but I went conservative...
I've been following with interest. I have a small batch of 21 which are roughly the same age. I was processing some old hens today and decided to process a Ranger roo as well to compare. I weighed him live and he was 7.75 lbs at 9.5 weeks. He dressed to 5.25 lb, a perfect 67% dressed to live...
Amador Hill Hens,
Thanks for the tip. I went through the pictures and the closest match is a Gold Laced Wyandotte. Since I ordered 20 wyandottes already, do you think they would throw in an additional Wyandotte as my exotic?
Here's the link to the chick pics at McMurray...
My chicks came in this morning, all healthy and happy. I received an order of cuckoo marans and blr wyandottes. Here is the free exotic:
Any idea what (s)he might be?

Chickn, Thanks so much for having a list and holding. I will be there as soon as legally possible. I am shooting for 8:30 am but will wait until 9 am to be fair.
I can't wait and I really appreciate your kindness!!
