Yea, good info. Thanks everyone. I have RI Red hens and a Black Austrlorp, 2 Buff Orps, and a Barred Rock. I would generally like to cycle out the older ones when they stop laying. But I cant see that happening as my kids have turned them into pets.
My hens are about 2 years old. They are all molting right now. Ive got no eggs for several weeks. How old are chickens when they stop laying and how long do they live? Im wondering when I should replace some of the girls.
I have 6 hens and usually get 4-5 eggs per day. Probaly 30-40% of my eggs have some sort of blood in the yolks or in the whites. Its usually a string of blood across the yolk or a dark blood colored spot in the white. My wife usually throws them away when she cracks them. We sell some eggs and I...
My chickens never really noticed the crows, but this week we had a hawk attack and now the chickens run between bushes in the yard to keep hid. They hide from the crows to. I guess they arent as stupid as people thinks.
Im not sure about the lime, but Ive found that if I do a quick poop scoop everyday in the run I have no smell. I covered my run with rock screenings from the local rock quarry and I just scoop up the poop daily and it works great. But I only have 7 chickens right now.
I like wood pine shavings best. They just seem to not make as big a mess as straw and is easier clean to me. I also like the smell of the shavings. Outside in my run I use rock dust from the local quarry. Works great.
Ive always heard 3-5sq ft per chicken. Ideally 10 sq ft per chicken. Same for the run I would assume. So I would say you can keep 10 hens and roo comfortably. My coop is the same size as yours. I made my run 10X20. I have 7 chickens right now. If your going to free range them on your land you...
You probaly need to design a way to get you some wire partially on the coop so the chickens can get light and air. I would probaly just frame it up higher with maybe some 2X4s in each corner and one on each side in the center. Then you could put you some welded wire around maybe half the coop. I...
The hens were RIR and Australorps. No symptoms what-so ever. The rest of the flock has never had any symptoms. I do notice some runny poop in the run occasionaly. Dont know which chickens do it. They free-range 2-3 hours a day. I feed them Purina Layena feed. They get fresh water daily and clean...
I have 6 hens right now. They are 1.5 years old. I been haveing one hen die about every 3-4 months. They never are sick or anything, they just die. None of the others in the flock ever act sick. Not sure why they just croak. Could they be eggbound or something? Anyone have any ideas.

We see blake snakes quite often on our farm. We try to just let them be unless they are close to the house. We have rattlers and copperheads in NC, but I have never saw one in my area.
