Lost another bird today. From my first brood.

I lost four out of 12 to predators in 18 months. That's not as bad as I was expecting. It's also sustainable. I just got 14 new birds and that'll hold the flock up until spring when I buy more. I considered a fence, but they have such fulfilling lives out grazing in the woods and the grass.

Lost another bird today. From my first brood.

I'm down to six of my original 12 birds. Four were lost to predators, I assume because they just never came back at night. One was hit by a car. Today I lost one to disease. Not exactly sure what it was, she'd been molting for ever, 8-10 weeks. She had been broody for 8 weeks before that, so we...

    egg laid with no shell

    This was a "new chickens" issue I think. I only ever saw 2 or 3 shell-less eggs, (I had 12 chickens, 11 now) and I haven't seen a shell-less egg in months.

Bandages and Iodine. Am I missing anything.

Yep. Boy did she hate being locked up the whole week.

Bandages and Iodine. Am I missing anything.

Update: looks like the week I spent soaking it in Epsom Salts, then changing the bandage every day, worked. No issues how that she's been out for about a week.

Bandages and Iodine. Am I missing anything.

I think I'm gonna just let her out tomorrow. I'm out of bandage wrap and her cut is really tiny now.

Bandages and Iodine. Am I missing anything.

Just looking for feedback. Got a hen who I found with a large scab on the top her foot last week. Read around and decided to go with the following treatment: 1. Isolate her in the coop 2. Daily soaks in Epsom Salts, massaging until the scab comes off 3. Apply Iodine & Change bandage...

    Laying Egg with no shell

One of my Ducks laid a rubber egg! Found it in the duck-pool, so it's probably not good to eat. But still cool....

    egg laid with no shell

There's 2 (un broken) eggs in the coop this morning, so I think we lucked out, the one chicken hasn't figured out that eggs with shells = food. But that soap idea is a good one. I'll definitely remember that just in case!

    egg laid with no shell

I just found a chicken eating an egg in the middle of the yard.... I chased her away from it and after I examined it.... it looks like it was an egg with no shell. Do I have to kill her or will she not eat her own eggs now?

    Free Range Ducks?

I have 3 Khaki's and 3 Pekins. The pekins will never fly, but the Khaki's have been flying for 30 or 40 feet at a stretch. They seem to be really dependent on each other, and don't like to separate. So far at least.

    Free Range Ducks?

Thanks Tofu. My birds have been out in the coop since early May, and so far, I still have all of them. The biggest hazard they face may actually be the fact that we live on a busy road, not that the predator hazard isn't also a worry. Over the weekend the ducks did try to cross the road...

    Clemente Coop: Currently under construction.

Picture time!! Here's the before: And here's the after: Turned out pretty good. I'm quite happy with how it changes the look/feel of my back yard. Sabz: The short story is that the ducks are much more work than the chicks. So I like the chickens better. I have to...
