    feather loss

Will feathers always grow back? Some of our hens suffered feather loss on their lower back, I think from overzealous roosters. We separated the hens from the roosters a few weeks ago and all the hens but one have new feathers coming in. Will hers ever return?

Snow...why do my chickens not seem to know what to do in the snow?

I thought that chickens were supposed to dislike snow! My chickens don't seem to even notice the snow...even when its snowing. They just act like its the middle of summer, I had to keep going and (in my mind) rescuing them today because it was snowing and they were just hanging out getting...

    Australorps breed Thread

ok here are some pics, maybe they will help show what I'm talking about, lol. Pic #1: Cockerel's feet, I know you can't totally see the underside but he is pretty big for me to try to lift him up and take a pic of the actual bottom of his feet. Picture #2: of Cockerel with one of his...

    Australorps breed Thread

Three of our chickens, two hens and one cockerel, were sold to us as Black Australorps. I have been very impressed with them, their personality is definitely the most low key in the flock, they never create any drama and are just so sweet and calm. They are almost 20 weeks old now, so I have...

    Polish Thread!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am just curious about the genetics involved in creating different colors of Polish. We have a buff laced Polish rooster whose personality we love...but we want hens and the buff laced isn't really my favorite Polish look, although he is adorable. What would be the best kind of Polish hens I...

    Are australorps friendly to humans

My Black Australorps are the calmest members of my flock, even the rooster is very sweet! Like has already been said, they seem to stay out of a lot of flock drama and just very calmly hold their own in the pecking order. Very nice birds.

Easter Egger Sexing "tips and tricks" *Pictures Included*

Thanks so much! I'm going to have to look closer at my EE pullet's combs now. My two cockerels have obvious pea combs but the pullets have such small combs I wasn't sure what kind they are. I was worried that only the boys carried the blue egg gene, which would be quite disappointing for me!

Easter Egger Sexing "tips and tricks" *Pictures Included*

I have two questions about EE combs... What is the comb supposed to look like on a pullet? And if a pullet doesn't have a pea comb, does that mean she won't lay some variety of blue colored eggs? I feel like I had read somewhere that the blue colored egg gene is related to the gene that...

Any one want to join me in waiting for eggs, posting and comparing notes?

This thread is so much fun! I'm happy I noticed it. My pullets are about 14 weeks old and I cannot wait for them to start laying. None of them seem super close to laying yet, although some are starting to squat when we try to pick them up. The kids are loving that they seem calmer now, lol...

    Faverolles Thread

What age do Faverolles chicks usually start to develop their beard/muffs? I have a feeling the cockerel I was planning to possibly keep as a rooster might not be full Faverolles since he has no sign of a beard or muff yet :(

Best size of treats for chicks?

For chicks that are between 2-3 months old, how big should the pieces of treats be that you give them? I'm thinking along the lines of mostly things from the garden...green beans, spinach, sweet peas, zuchinni, pears...etc

Hens or roos? (With close up pics) Buff orpington

Hmmmm I'll be interested to hear what everyone will have to say. I only have one Orpington, so I am not at all qualified to help you, unfortunately. But, my Orpington cockerel is 10 weeks old and already has bigger wattles than the one in your picture and has a huge crow that he loves to belt...

    Faverolles Thread

Two of my 10 week old Salmon Faverolles chicks are cockerels and I am pretty sure I know which I am hoping to keep, but what things do you look for in a cockerel to try to guess who will grow up to be a nice example of the breed standard?
