2 Gallon Double Wall Fount

Waterers are constructed of heavy gauge galvanized steel with rolled edges for safety. Features...
Pros: Hold good amount of water
Cons: Cant hang and will freeze quickly
I had this in my chicken coop but would way rather the plastic one over this because this one freezes what to fast in the winter. Because it is metal, the cold will make the metal even colder freezing the water inside. When I came out to the coop every morning to redo the water, i saw a chickens whos comb got stuck on the ice makeing the comb freeze. I would not recomend this product. Get the plastic one. :)

Looks nice but impossible to keep clean. The anti-roost design is laughable. My hens stand on it and poop down the side directly into the water. I have to wash it out entirely every day, but realistically twice daily would be better. BTW, this is not intended to be hung, which is why the handle isn't designed for it. It states this on the label.
Pros: Metal construction, doesn't promote algae growth.
Cons: Cost and handle needs to be modified to keep it from slipping to one side or the other of the handle.
Have used them for years. Durable galvanized construction, doesn't have the algae growth that the white plastic waterers are prone to producing. They are a bit pricey though.

Pros: Metal construction
Cons: Typical gravity waterer
Just a typical waterer in metal so they last a whole lot longer. But compared to a nipple system they are lacking. So three star

Pros: - Good capacity
- Durable and rugged
- Easy to carry when full if using internal handle
Cons: - Outer / top handle must be modified to hang w/out sliding
- Will rust badly if not occasionally cleaned
We've used this type of waterer for several years now. Our first one rusted out in a couple seasons, I think mainly due to the fact that we never bothered to clean it out very well. With our second one, I usually scrub out the bottom every couple months, and has held up about 3 years now without rusting.

I like the 2 gallon capacity -- doesn't need to be refilled as often as the other plastic 1 gallon waterer we use in the summers. It is easy to carry full of water by using the internal handle (i.e. the one in the "tank", with the top off). When I get out to the coop after refilling, I put top on there and then hang it back up.

To hang by the outside handle (i.e. the one on the top), it needs to be modified in some way to keep it from sliding to one side or the other and spilling all the water out. We did this by lashing the handle with some thick cord, leaving a gap in the middle for the hanging hook. It now hangs securely from the middle of that outer handle, with no room for the hook to slide off to either side.

Pros: easy to fill, sturdy, large capacity, compatible with a heated base for winter use to keep water from freezing, doesn't promote algae growth as the material blocks light
Cons: gradually develops rust on the bottom
I really like this waterer, especially for winter use with a heated base. Mine has been in use for 6 years with no problems.

Pros: It only holds 2 gallons so it not too heavy to carry around, it's very easy to fill up and clean, etc.
Cons: None
I think this waterer is great. It only holds 2 gallons of water so if you're a younger, older or out of shape it's not too much work to carry from the hose to the coop. It's it's very easy to fill up compared to other waterers I've had for example you don't have to twist the cap on the correct way to get the waterer to work properly ) It's metal so so it won't get scratched or break like the plastic and glass ones do.
Pros: Um, none.
Cons: Rusts in less than 2 months, Leaks worse than a sink that has not been visited by the plumber in 50 years.
I spent $20.00 on this dang waterer thinking it would be good and durable, and worth my investment, WRONG! It leaked so bad, was so hard to use, and totally not worth my money. Within 2 months it was so rusted I could not use it any more, and I was actually relieved to throw it away, I was tired of the neighbors calling to ask if we were alright because I screamed obscenities at it daily. The feed store did not even give me my money back with a receipt, and I took as good care of it as possible.
Pros: Sturdy, easy to use no problems
Cons: Can be messy while carrying it.
Absouletly love it. No leaking works wonderfully. Great if your not going to be home all the time. The only problem I have is carrying it back to coop I do spill it on myself. My water source is in the front of my yard so spills are to be expected lol. Water stays cleaner than another waterer I had. I have no problems with it overflowing at all. Mine works the way its supposed to. I do have mine on a few pieces of wood so water stays cleaner. I know its not level and I still do not have any overflowing problems.
Pros: sturdy
Cons: rusts
This one works ok for awhile but over time it begins to rust on the inside. Yuck.
We have a huge plastic one now that fills from the top but will run over the sides if
not placed on a flat even surface. May have to try the nipple waterers and see
how they work.
Pros: none really
Cons: leaks, rusts, froze in spite of sitting on heating base
I bought one in Sept and it worked fine until Dec. As long as it was hanging from a hook, it didn't leak. The minute I had to place it on the heating base, it leaked consistently all over the coop floor until it was empty. Extremely inconvenient when the snow is 5' high and the temp is zero degs and I have 2 gals of water soaking the floor and shavings. I've since stored it away and am using large non-tipping dog dishes on heated bases and this worked so much better. Would not recommend this product.

Pros: Hangs high enough to keep bedding out of the water, keeps the water cool, big enough to last the day
Cons: I had to put tape on the handle to keep the chain from sliding and letting the water drip out.
I've had chickens for 7 years now and love these founts! They keep the water cooler even in the heat of summer and are big enough to last all day long. On really hot days I add ice to the water and that helps with keeping it cool too. The founts last 4 or 5 years before starting to rust, so I consider it a good investment. They can be put on a heated base in the winter and since we don't have running water to the chicken coop that is a great help - otherwise I'd be out there several times a day replacing frozen water. I think these are great.

Pros: Always work
Cons: none
I really have a hard time understanding why some people have difficulty with this type waterer. They work on the simple principle that water can't escape unless air can get in. If you keep it in a location where it is relatively level then the water level in the reservoir will rise just above the line where air can't enter the container. It doesn't matter if the rubber seal is worn out or brand new, fill it fast and put the lid on it properly and sit it in the level location where it will stay. As the chickens drink the water and the level lowers air will enter and the same amount of water will exit into the reservoir, it is a very simple system that has worked for many years. My grandfather had a double walled galvanized fount many years ago and a cousin of mine still uses it today. They will last forever with just a little love and care.

If yours is leaking then you are not using it correctly and maybe you need a lesson in common knowledge or something similar!
Pros: Sturdy, can be heated
Cons: rusts, leaks
Besides the eventual rust that comes with most old metal waterers, water spills out the trough of this when I refill it.
Pros: galvanized coating still looks great
Cons: leaks no matter how you position it
I love the way this thing looks & I really wanted to like it. It's sturdy metal, made in USA, etc. Seems like it should work great, right?
WRONG! This thing sucks worse than being behind a driver doing 15 MPH under the speed limit in a 28 mile long "no passing zone". It will leak no matter how it is positioned, cleaned, adjusted, prayed to, cursed at, exorcized, pleaded with, etc. It will leak like that is what it was designed to do. And it's very good at that job. I give this thing a ½ star rating only because I couldnt rate it a minus-3 stars. The company that builds these should be ashamed of their quality control.
Cons: plastic plug inside doesn't stick,so it always leaks/runs. siacked the floor of the coop overnight. freezes faster, broke stuff trying to unfreeze it.
don't buy
Pros: cheap
Cons: leaks, rusts quickly
You have to get this perfectly level for the water to work and then sometime it still leaks. You have to monkey around with for it to work.

The handle is welded cheaply and busted off when I was carrying it. The main top part and handle area rusted with three-four month of buying this.

I got two and within four month both were busted handles, rusted and useless.

I got a plastic bucket and it works fine.
Pros: Nice Metal Look
Cons: Leaks like crazy,
I couldn't get this thing to stop leaking. I even tested it by putting it on a flat concrete surface and it still leaked out the entire 2 gallons. Tried hanging it, tried sitting it on the ground. Returned it and went with the 3 gallon plastic. Girl at returns didn't even blink an eye, I think they probably get a few of these coming back in the door.
Pros: Doesn't get as slimy as plastic waterers
Cons: Hard to level, rusted
If these waterers aren't fairly level they leak -- that's pretty obvious. We don't have a lot of flat level spots in our chicken areas, so decided to hang our waterers and let gravity level them for us. But any clip a person might hang the waterers from could easily slide to one side of the waterer is jostled, then the waterer would not be level and the water would leak. We fixed this by putting stopper bolts on the handles, but if the handles were designed with a peak in the middle, they would hang straight without modifications. It seems like an obvious design flaw to me.

We also have very acidic water in our well, so the waterers all rusted within a few months.

Obviously we stopped using them.

This product would get at least 3 stars from me if it would hang straight without modification.
Pros: Sturdy and works well so long as you keep it level
Cons: Trouble with one rusting.
I bought 2 two gallon founts last spring when I first got my feathery bunch and they have both been filled using the same exact water and used the same amount of time. One of the founts is still in great shape while the second is all rusted inside. Looks like the galvanizing didn't hold up. I will either have to buy another or figure out a way to seal or paint the inside to stop the rust.
