Ameraucana

The Ameraucana was developed in the 70's by a few people who were trying to standardize the...
Pros: personality, appearance, Blue-ish Eggs!
Cons: can't think of one
My Wheaton Ameraucana pullet is strikingly beautiful and soft. I love her "beard" and the way she always makes eye contact. She is chatty and likes to be picked up for a little conversation and personal attention. I've noticed that my unrelated Easter Eggers who have similar physical characteristics also have similar personalities, although they stay just out of reach.

However the Easter Eggers lay a softly hued blue green egg, compared to the more saturated baby blue egg of my Ameraucana. FYI - if you haven't had blue shelled eggs before, they are really fun, although probably not as deeply colored as most people imagine.

So far the EE eggs are larger and they lay about 5/wk, but they are also a few months older. My Ameraucana makes up for size with a fresh egg almost daily (she just laid 10 days in a row, usually takes just a day off once in awhile).
Pros: Green eggs
Cons: Skittish heavy don't eat when your to close and it goes on
Beautiful breed not nise at all very skittish very heavy and they hate your company I love there green eeggs and that's all I have to say

I love Ameraucana's. They are sweet, and beautiful. Ameraucana's can lay brown, green, and blue eggs. If you are searching for what breed to get, I suggest Ameraucana's.
Pros: They have laid all winter long, they look beautiful and they seem to have a great temperment.
I have 5 Ameraucana's that I bought to help replenish our flock last spring. I had no idea they would have the "beard" feature (or what my husband calls mutton chops). Their green eggs are a big hit with my customers. I plan on investing in some more this spring because they are great layers and they seem to have a good temperment.

Great chickens. No real color difference in eggs, but I'm color blind so maybe there is some color I'm not seeing.

Pros: roosters have awsome colors, ok with being held
Cons: can be mean to other chickens
My ameraucana rooster, Blue, is one of the perttiest roosters i have seen, he is a Blue Wheaten, but when it comes to putting out the feed in the mornig he trys to chase the hens away for like 10-20 min but he gets over it after that. Hes really good when it comes to being held, he even lets me file down his spers when they get really sharp.

Pros: They lay good sized eggs and are friendly towards me
Cons: Are aggressive towards new chickens and are shy at first
I have an ameraucana hen and a pullet. The hen is aggressive towards new chickens but the pullet isn't. The hen loves it when I pick her up and even gets jealous when I hold another chicken. The pullet is shy and not aggressive at all.
Pros: Sweet, beautiful eggs
Cons: Not too friendly
I love my Ameracaunas, but they don't love me back.

Pros: Intelligent
I have an Ameraucana hen that lays large green eggs, although I have heard the best bloodlines will lay blue eggs. My family, friends and neighbors love seeing the occasional green egg in their carton! In my most recent assortment order of chicks, a neighbor bought all my Ameraucana chicks from me. Would like to keep the next ones that come along for myself.

Pros: very productive, attractive birds, lovely egg color
Cons: too flighty
I will probably always have ameraucanas in my flocks, but not because they're my favorite. I just have to have them for the eggs. My customers love having some blue eggs in each carton, so I keep buying the hens just for that one reason. The hens are pretty to look at, but personality-wise, kinda crazy. I suppose if I only had a couple of hens, I could probably tame one enough to handle easily, but I just don't have time for it. They are a very productive bird, though, so that certainly compensates for their silly-crazies.
Pros: none so far lol
Cons: no friendly at all , runs around crazy like a road runner and picks on all the smaller birds
These will be my first and last ameraucanas . Maybe I just got some crazy ones but __ wow lol . These ladys are crazy always running around and up to no good . lol I guess thats one thing thats good is they are fun to watch . I have jersy giants - buff orpingtons -barr pl rocks -austrolops- and some delawares and not one comes close to these crazy birds lol
Pros: Weird looks, free-thinker, survivor
Cons: Not friendly
I started with six Ameraucanas and five got killed by predators. The survivor will have nothing to do with the chicken coop, rain or shine or cold she is roosting high in an oak tree next to the house and in the morning waits by the coop for me to let the other chickens out to play. She'll never let me near her. Perhaps this is due to her traumatic childhood. I'm sure she's laying - somewhere - but doubt I'll every see her eggs.
Pros: does most of his rooster duties
Cons: extremely loud
i have a silver ameraucana rooster. i bought him for $10 from a neighbor. he doesn't do anything extraordinary. i guess he's just a normal rooster. but he is still one of my favorite chickens.

My father-in-law has a flock of Ameraucana hens, since seeing his flock I have fallen in love with the breed

He does not have a Am rooster. So I'm waiting patiently till I get my own.
Pros: Very friendly
Cons: None for me
I started with Mom and Dad when they were chicks, eventually hatched 32 babies in my kitchen counter incubator. Had to give most of the babies away but in the end I kept 4 roosters and 4 hens + rescued a Rhode Island Red hen. Lost 1 rooster and 2 hens year one and two, but now 4 years later I still have 3 roosters and 3 hens, all but one are Ameraucana's. My A's have pretty much stopped laying eggs, only the Red still gives me an egg every other day or so but I still treat them like children and they see me as their mom. I let the hens free range every day from 8 am-2 pm, then put them up and let the roosters roam from 2-8 pm, that way I won't have fertile eggs. Everyone is put up in fully enclosed coops at night due to local coyotes and foxes on the prowl. All of my Ameraucana roosters and hens have been very friendly and I have no complaints, so I highly recommend them as pets. Locals can't believe my roosters come to greet them vs. attacking them, although Big Daddy Elvis has had a few power struggles with my goats! I won't be getting any more animals due to severe arthritis in my spine and hips, but I have truly enjoyed my chicken experience :)
Pros: Great layer!
Cons: Not personable
This is a great laying bird, laying 25 days out of 30 on average. Beautiful but not personable.

Pros: Blue eggs of course! She is the sweetest of all my chickens, and the prettiest, in my mind!
Cons: None that I can think of!
I hatched her out (the only one of 5 eggs) in an incubator, my first hatch! She was hatched on July 5th. We did not pay anything for her, since a friend gave me the eggs for free. She is absolutely wonderful, her temperament is so sweet! You can walk right up and pick her up, and she will follow you around. We love her!

Pros: Curious, shy, medium green/blue eggs
Cons: Submissive
We have 2 Americana's (not sure if that's spelled right, but hey, I'm a chicken farmer... <grin> I know, its not an excuse, but it is what it is...) I really like them. Our birds are shy, but curious when I start bringing out the treats. I call them 'Wall Flowers' because they spend most of their time on the roost, in the coop.

These birds are definitely at the bottom of the pecking order. One of them was nearly killed by our 2nd brood of RIR, GLW/SLW/ and BR's. It was an interesting exercise in integrating our 2nd brood with our first brood of BO's. The BO's actually accepted the Americana's into the flock first, and allow them to roost on the same level. I think this may have actually saved the one and elevated both of their status. I had separated the aggressive birds from the 2nd brood, and integrated the remaining 'teenagers' with our older flock of Buf Orp's. The BO's did fine with the non aggressive birds from the 2nd brood and basically ignored them. Until I integrated the 3 aggressive birds from the 2nd brood. The BO's promptly put them in their place (one of the BO's is a roo), and the pecking stopped. I think this was successful because of a lot of luck, and a lot of research on BYC - so thanks y'all!

Outside of the GLW's - which are probably the most striking birds in our flock, the Am's are probably the prettiest (is that a word? or just poor spelling again? not to mention grammer... Gad's back to WR111...) they are cool looking birds. Puffy cheeks and one is a cream color, the other is Gray and brown/gold.

They have been laying a greenish blue or bluish green... egg every other day or so. Not great layers but the eggs are really pretty (now that is a word!).

They are gentle and shy, but seem to be survivors. I'm hoping they make it out of the coop into the run before the weather turns.

ZOUNDS! a spell checker to! - maybe I dont have to go back to WR111... naw, I shuld...
Pros: Good Layers, Colored Eggs, and Beautiful.
Cons: Aggressive,Flighty,and Not Friendly
Ameraucana's are beautiful birds and lay about 4-6 eggs a week. Although, they are very aggressive
very shy and run away immediately once they see you coming. They eggs are the best part of the Ameraucana mainly because they come in green, blue, and other colors (are's lay green eggs).
