Ameraucana

The Ameraucana was developed in the 70's by a few people who were trying to standardize the...
Pros: Great laying breed my coustomers like the blue and green eggs
Cons: Nothing negative about them
On my chicken farm I have Americans in my flock the reason why because they are a laying breed that's what I have on farm
Pros: calm temperment and cold hardy
Cons: not a great layer
These were my first hens. Pretty and good chickens for first timers. Not super friendly but also not flighty or mean. The green eggs are pretty but mine aren't great layers. The tan one lays for a couple of weeks and then goes broody. The white is the better layer but only lays from about May through September and then stops for the winter, even with coop lights.

They are very winter hardy. I'm in Wisconsin so that's important. Their combs are very small and they are fully feathered.

I don't think I would get Americaunas again because of the poor laying.

Pros: Beautiful,loves his hens,protective
Cons: Aggressive towards me(floggs/attacks me) but I still love him

This is my ameraucana rooster(picture from last fall) he loves his hens, finds them food, protects them, lets them ''groom'' him,and he's even went in the nestbox with a couple hens to comfort them while laying an egg,I just love him!! And I want to get some ameraucana hens
Pros: Beautiful blue/black feathers, sturdy, clean
Cons: Flighty, nice but doesn't like to be touched, screams when I pick up
After reviewing pictures on BYC, I definitely have a female Americana. I call her Chicken Little because she always acts as if the sky is falling. None of my other chicks act this way. I have a NN and 2 silkies. She does pick on the smaller chicks at times, but also grooms them at night before they go to bed. My Am doesn't seem confident around humans, however acts as a leader among the flock.
I'm still waiting for eggs, but am very excited to have colored eggs!

Pros: Smart, good natured around children, good layers, and hardy.
Cons: Can't think of any negatives.
Before I knew anything about chickens, our neighbors hatched a dozen Easter Eggers in their kitchen. This was five years ago. Since then, they've added some other breeds, and we've added some more Easter Eggers to our shared flock. And, of course, we have some mixed breeds that have been hatched by their mommies. One of the original Easter Eggers is still with us. She's getting a little long in the tooth (so to speak), but she still lays an egg now an then. Easter Eggers just seem overall to have friendly dispositions around one another and around people. They're called Easter Eggers because of their large, pale blue eggs. Some lay eggs that are slightly greenish.
Pros: Pretty
Cons: Aggressive, they pick on the other birds in the flock
I have 3 Americanas, one I raised from a baby, and she is second in the pecking order. She will tolerate me being around and sometimes allows me to pet her without a fuss, and she was handled daily since about a week old. We just obtained 2 black Americanas from a lady after one of our original flock silkies was killed by a hawk, and they are always picking on the smallest ones, IE, the little ones will be sleeping and they will go over and attack them. Wondering how I can stop this. I am not very fond of Americanas so far and we have more of those in our flock than any other. :(
Pros: Great layers, good attitude, large eggs, hardy size makes them good for butchering once laying stops
Cons: Harder to breed (I've only tried incubation, not very broody
I love Ameraucanas. They're one of the prettiest and most unique breeds around.

Pros: tolerant of my bantams, beautiful egg color, pretty hen
Cons: the hatchery ones (not true ameraucans) are often crazy and unpredictable
my ameraucana is a true ameraucana, not like the ones ive had in the past that were easter eggers from a hatchery (sodl as ameraucanas).. they were pretty, but flighty and a bit crazy to be honest
Pros: cold weather hardy, nop freeeze comb, calm
Cons: none....yet ;)
I love these birds. They are friendly, beautiful and really tolerate our cold Canadian winters great.
Pros: fun to watch, friendly, beautiful eggs
Cons: none that I've found
I originally got Ameraucana's because of the egg colour. Who could resist green/blue eggs? Once I started to raise them...well! The first thing that struck me was how much they resemble predators, with those beards puffing out the sides of their faces. When they face you straight on...totally reminds me of something out of Jurassic Park

. But on the flip side of that coin, when they come racing over to you to get their treats and their beards are swinging free...

they are just too cute for words!
I have had them in my flock since 2009 and can't imagine a bunch of girls without them. They add character to the yard (not that mine really needs much more character LOL) and colour to the carton. I really adore them.
I've read a few posts that people find them unfriendly and aggressive with other birds; I have two different batches of them in my flock right now. The first I got in 2009 and the second in 2011. The girls in 2009 I spend a fair amount of time with as they were my first shipment of chicks. These girls are supremely friendly, very docile, don't run away when I try to touch them they just sort of move out of the way of my hand and then look at me. The girls from the 2011 shipment are more stand-offish. But they will still come running to get treats and only one of them is what I would call aggressive. Interestingly, she got sick last winter and when she got better, it was like she wasn't going to take any more crap from anyone and started to assert herself. She really got picked on a lot when she was ill.
Anyway, I'm babbling here (get used to it folks, it happens a lot

Pros: Nice big blue eggs
Cons: skiddish at a young age
I have both hard feathered and silkied feather and love the way they look, chatter, and lay beautiful eggs. I will be working on a Chocolate AM that I got from a very reputable breeder. Everyone should have at least one. My flock of AM's consists of Wheaten, Black, Blue hard feathered and Black, Blue and Splash silkied feathered.
Ameraucanas are wonderful chickens!! They lay beautiful blue/green eggs! They are also timid with other chickens but some individuals are bold and can be mean to
other chickens!! They still do ok with different types of chickens!!
This breed comes in a variety of colors and are sweet when petted!!
I recommend this breed!!
Pros: Curious personalities, nice plumage and a large variety of vocal notes
Cons: Can be loud, skittish or distrusting. lower egg production
I personally don't like my flock without these chickens. They are my quirky old men with beards --- even my hens! If you find a decent bloodline the plumage of the adults is striking. I enjoy that they are curious about everything I do, whilst I have one or two that will happily watch from a safer distance. They occasionally get a hair up their butts and do something silly like flap around the coop or jump on your lap. Some of my hens are fairly affectionate. I would prefer if they laid more frequently but nothing beats cracking open a blue egg for omlets!
Pros: Fast, Can fun from predators, Smart, Pretty
Cons: Maybe too fast
I love this bird
Pros: Good layers, colored eggs, fluffy cheeeks, roosters are handsome, hens are sweet.
Cons: sometimes like to fight

Well i have 4 ameraucana chickens and they are so sweet. They love to go in the goat pen and garden. Red the rooster likes to be held like a baby.
And the hens just love it here.
Pros: very friendly, good layers love the puffy cheeks and cherps, rooster is good with people and his hens
Cons: can't think of any
for those that have flighty or mean birds, I wonder who you got them from? The first EE's I got from a popular hatchery were a little flighty but still would come running when I had treats and eat out of my hand, and are very good layers They are now 5 and do not lay every day, The ones I bought this yr, are from a breeder and are so far super friendly, even the little roos. come up and jump on my shoulder if I am doing something in their run. Theese have not started to lay yet. I have never had one pick on flock mates. and have learned all ready that when people come out the back door, get there fast they may have food

Pros: pretty bird, pretty eggs
Cons: medium sized eggs, low production, flighty
I was so enthralled with the prospect of having those pretty blue, green and/or cream eggs that I overlooked the reality of these chickens. They just aren't great layers and since I want to get something in exchange for the $ and time I spend on them, it's just not working out so well. I think I will keep a few for the novelty, but will go for a larger sized, larger quantity layer in the future.

Pros: Lay pastel eggs, they have cute puffy cheecks, they are lovely birds, Good layers, and the roosters are soooo pretty!
Cons: None that I can think of
I love Americauans! They are so pretty! They have great pea combs small waddles (when they have waddles). This is a picture of my 1yr old Americauna rooster Eddy:
I have 2 or 3 Americaunas (1 might be an EE). The rooster lets you hold him, the EE/Americauna hen went through a lot when she was younger (I had rescued her from the side of the road) and still is ok sweet. The other Americauna so wild! Not tame at all! She was so sweet as a chick too! I don't know what happened but I still love her! My Americauna rooster weighs almost 8 pounds he's a big guy! Americaunas are the cutest things! I love their puffy cheeks (so cute)! I request getting an Americauna!

Pros: pretty, beautiful eggs, gets along great with the other chickens
Cons: Very Very flighty,Can be very noisy
Very Very flighty is the only bird we have that we have to chase down to catch because it got out. She is a escape artist and the only one to ever get out. Can be noisy ours is the loudest out of everyone if not for her you wouldn’t even know we had chickens. She is not people friendly what so ever, even though I put a lot of time and effort into handling all of the chickens we have to get them people friendly. She is the only one that avoids people.
Pros: good starters and good with others
Cons: I don't know yet
I have 1 month old Ameraucanas and they are very pretty, friendly, and playful. They can be very bold at sometimes... really only when they have to face my 3 month old white leghorns, red stars, and black stars!!!
