Pros: personality times 10
Cons: a bit loud
Ok, so I just have 4 chickens. 2 of them at Barred Plymouth Rocks, and that was really by accident. But I'm glad it turned out this way. What an interesting and varied personality! I guess it's one reason I am attracted to them in particular. My Julia is at the top of the pecking order, always leading the way, and always the first to find the higher ground for a look-out. In contrast, my Carmen is last in the pecking order. She is much more willing to make a pal of a human, while Julia could really care less unless it means getting to a treat first. I call Julia "Julia The Opportunistic Chicken." If she could start a business I think she would. The thing is, she'll let you know it. It's nice to know where the chickens are hanging out in the yard sometimes, but they sure are loud about it. Loud about everything, especially when they are put out for me leaving them in the pen or not bringing a treat along soon enough.

Pros: docile, rather quiet, fluffy!
Cons: ??
Goldie is my snuggle girl. She doesn't even mind my loud, goofy 5 and 7 year old boys' attention. She'd probably plop on my lap for hours if I let her. When my 4 girls were attacked by a hawk (through some team work and a very persistent Golden Sex Link, they are all fine), Goldie's feathers were everywhere. It looked as though several chickens had been de-feathered all over my lawn and my living room (that's a funny part of the story). The amazing thing was Goldie didn't look like she lost a single feather at all. There is something to be said for a chicken with a snugglie personality and oodles of snugglie feathers to back it up. She's a charm.

Pros: makes less noise than my plymouth rocks
Cons: not as friendly as my other gals
At just 20 weeks old, Beauty fought off a hawk. She had the help of her 3 "sisters," but I watched most of it go down, and she was certainly the toughest. What a hardy girl! She was so young, but within just a week of the attack, she seemed to thrive more than ever. I could be reading more into this chicken than I should, but after her initial shock, she came away from the experience with a new confident strut, grew a lot in size, and her comb and waddle deepened in color, size and vibrancy. She's not my friendliest chicken, but she puts up with being picked up for a snuggle with tea. I like her independence and I'd recommend her hybrid self to anyone.
