Brahma

I bought one hatchery bird, now 2 yrs. old. I have no idea what her laying rate is. She's kind of skittish despite the fact that I handled her daily as a chick. She's easy going otherwise. I don't think I'd get another one, but she's so pretty to look at I'll keep her.

We love our Brahmas. They are so sweet. Even when they are out roaming I can cluck and they will run to me for a meal worm treat.

My favorite from all the hens and roosters I've ever had.
They are big and very tame. They do require a little more attention in terms of cleaning them and such but they are so tame its no problem.

This is my favorite breed. I have a 4 year old Buff Columbian Brahma rooster, Lionel. 11 pounds. he is the oldest but also a coward... I have forced him in an enclosed pen with my other Light Brahma hen Pidgin because for the past few months he has been a lone batchlor on the tree and outside the flock. the "lawn ornament" roosters even boss him around. I have never had bad temperment from these guys. Crossing them with other breeds has created very strong hybrid vigor.
I have a smaller buff brahma hen called BB. she follows me around, likes pets, scratches and is happy to sit next to me and jumps on my lap.... sometimes if i am ignoring her she makes a light 'dig peck' for attention. Mine tend to lay Pink eggs.
They might be very slow to mature, but roosters are easy to pick out because they are super slow. Lionel finally stopped growing last year and at 3 years of age he finally went through his first molt.

A wonderful breed for a back yard flock! I had a Light Brahma that followed me like a puppy. Good layers of big brown eggs. Occasionally broody, they are good mothers.

Very friendly, calm chickens. I only have one but she lays almost every day.

I have raised the Light, Dark, Buff varities and loved them all. Really large, beautiful birds that are total babies. Their large size and beautiful color patterns gathers a lot of attention to people visiting your coop. The only reason I have them 4 instead of 5 stars is that they are just average layers medium to small sized eggs.

Such a cool breed and very similar to the Cochins that I also love!! Mine started laying and just haven't stopped. They are great birds and love being outside and being with people. My rooster at 5 months is about 10 pounds (maybe more) but is the biggest baby ever. They will even back down to the young 6 week old chicks when they get pushy. There isn't an aggressive bone in them. They make good meat birds in my opinion. Mine grew fast, laid quicker than expected and I was able to process them at 20 weeks with decent results. All were between 6 and 8 pounds with decent breasts and dark meat portions. Can't do better than that and if I can get great personality as well I'm in!!

They make some pretty cool funny noises. My roo will make noises like a cat purring and also will make a loud almost growl. Scared me the first few times but it's just him having something to say. My hen is already broody at 5 months but is so nice I can take the eggs from her with no problem.

I can't say enough good about this breed!!!

We really enjoy this breed! They are great with the kids, good egg layers and do well in Montana winters. They also have done well free ranging.

I love these chickens. We hatched out some Dark Brahma chicks in spring 2011 and they quickly became my absolute favorite chickens. We currently have one gentle giant roo and four gorgeous hens, with a broody Orpington sitting on six more eggs as of 1/11/12. The chickens are so tame they come up and stand on my feet and sit in my lap, even the rooster. They are very talkative but in a quiet cooing sort of way, and so far the rooster crows far less often than other roosters we have had. The rooster has shown absolutely no human aggression and even lets my four, eight and ten year old daughters hold and pet him.
