Cochin

Cochins came from China in the 19th Century. They were recognized by the APA in 1874. They were...
Pros: Small, great hatchers, small eggs perfect for an "eggMcmuffin"
Cons: Small eggs
I have one cochin left (**** fox). She is TINY compared to the rest of our flock (that she raised). They are GREAT chickens as pets since they are so friendly. She sits on my shoulder when I'm in the coop and she sings to me! Soft as silk and so friendly! If we didn't have suck a big rooster I'd get more cochins...

Pros: Good pet
Cons: Don't lay much
Docile, tame, not as frantic as other chicken breeds. Rather dumb, but good broodies. They don't lay much though, and aren't very smart at all. Quiet, fluffy, and have an unfortunate appetite for styrofoam, more so than other chickens.
Pros: awsome pet
Cons: not always calm
my frizzled cochine is the best pet you could get.theyre almost calm but friendly and they are very protective about the hens...i mean very protective, but other than that there good pets
Pros: Often Broody
Cons: Unreliable for egg production
I ordered the Ornamental Layers Collection from Murray McMurray Hatchery which included a variety of breeds. I received multiple Black and White Cochins. A particular Black Cochin goes broody often. She is an attentive mother hen - does not leave her nest for long and protects her eggs vigorously. Although I keep chickens for egg production, I was happy to have a breed that would give me baby chicks!

Pros: Cold hardy, friendly, docile, calm
Cons: Not heat tolerant, usually only fair layers
I bought a bantam partridge cochin hen this August at the county fair as a "present" for my mom (she's technically not my chicken, but I take care of her anyway). And she almost immediately took over as my favorite hen. She's very calm, very easy to handle, especially when she's distracted by treats, and cute as a button! She's also one of my best laying hens, even though her eggs are on the small side (43-48 grams). All my pullets but one have started molting and stopped laying, but Little is still going strong with 3-4 eggs per week. Great breed of chicken, will definitely get more in the future. :)

Pros: VERY Friendly, Very Cute
Cons: None
My little brother has a Birchen Cochin Bantam Roo named Jerry. Jerry is the friendliest chicken of our flock, he even come inside the house! My brother would take him on the tree swing, so now Jerry will jump up on the swing and flap his wings to make it move! It's soo cute. Jerry also follows you around, and make the cutest noises to you. Jerry is definantly a flock fave!

Pros: Docile, Attractive, Non-Aggressive
Our Patridge Cochin, Meatball, was the bonus chick McMurray added to our chick order and we think he has been just wonderful! He towers over the rest of our chickens and when he runs, he sort of lopes in long strides. It makes us laugh to watch it! He's extremely docile with my children when they scoop him up to hold him, and he's very well-mannered with our other chickens. A friend says he grew up with Cochins as part of his family's flock and he said they were always extremely calm and friendly. Cochins are very slow-growers, so at 25 weeks, Meatball still isn't as feathered out as I expect he will be next year, and he has not yet begun to crow.

Pros: Great flock protector, beautiful, hearty, large size
Cons: His crow is too much. :)
I love my buff cochin roo. He is always around, checking on everyone, and as soon as I come in the chicken yard he runs over. It's comical to watch him run because he looks like he's wearing fur boots. He doesn't love to cuddle or anything, but does let me approach him and give him a quick pet before he's off running again. I'm so attached to him and I can't keep him much longer. His crow sounds like a fog horn, instead of the cock a doodle doo.

I'll definitely get this breed again.

From feathered feet to his glorious hackles, there isnt a mean bone in his body! Best roo I have ever had. Literally feeds the underdog birds, brings them food and bawks till they eat it. he is so nice to hold and just an overall joy!

These are my favorites!!
Pros: so fun to watch them walk! and interact w/ the rest of the flock!
Cons: one is a bit of a loner & often takes off to have alone time.
These girls are good layers for this breed, I get 2 or 3 eggs a week each. Aside from the one being a loner, occassionally one gets settee. I just let it run it's course. I've been told to dunk her in cold water to help her get over it, but I have not done so and it passes, she's dirt bathing w/ the rest of the flock again.

Pros: Sweet, gentle, calm, kid friendly, make good pets
Cons: Not very heat-hardy
I have one cochin, Boots, a black cochin, and she is sweet as can be. I can walk right up to her and pick her up. Cochins thrive in cold climates, but basically wilt in the heat. They have no ability to keep cool once they are hot. If you live in a hot climate, I would not reccomend this breed, but, if you live in a cooler climate, GO GET SOME COCHINS!!!!
Pros: everything
Cons: supposedly egg production
I love my golden laced cochin! One of my smartest birds. One of my nicest birds. loves humans and will cuddle with you without treats. Just amazing birds.

Egg production is said to be a problem. I dont think so if you have one or two breeds such as plymouth rocks.
They still lay eggs (~3times a week~) thats 9 eggs from three birds a week! that is still quite good (the average for backyard chickens is 5). I would reccomend cochins to anyone starting a backyard flock

Pros: very pretty birds with tons of personality! Hens make good mothers
Cons: hens lay small eggs
I have a black Cochin bantam and a buff Cochin Hen. My hen makes a great surrogate mother to chicks I bring home fromTSC. My rooster on the other hand can be a real handful.
Mine are still chicks so I dont know much about their personality but right now they are so cute!!
Pros: Friendly
I have a hen and a rooster. They both like to be held and love attention. The rooster is slightly aggressive towards the other chickens though.
