8 weeks ago we got 4 chicks; an easter egger, a light brahma, a black australorp, and a barred cochin. The easter egger was a day old and the others were all a week old.
A couple weeks ago they moved out of my office and into a giant wire dog crate in the main coop. I've started letting them...

UPDATE: Be sure to follow the link above to our new coop page - it's much more impressive!
We started with 3 baby chicks in the fall of 2004 - Lola the RIR, Baby the Barred Rock and Clementine the Easter Egger. Baby passed away in spring of 2007, and we have just added a new...
The new and improved Kleiman Koop.
After almost five years with chickens, we finally created a new and improved coop!
We used a gazebo that was already in our yard as the frame and built the coop into it, and the whole gazebo became the run. This is far more secure, and better looking...

We used Osmo Park Lane transparent cedar stain for the whole thing.
Some of the 2x2's are dark cedar and some are clear cedar, so the stain looks a little different in different places - but that just gives it a rustic feel!

Yes, that is one of the improvements we are thinking about making.
The area they are closed into at night is very secure and we have never seen raccoons or other predators out during the day, so I think they are fine for now.
We just finished building our new coop - we used a gazebo that was already in the yard for the frame - we turned the whole space into the run and built the coop into it.
Thanks for all the quick responses.
Our new coop is much bigger (i'll post pictures soon) so we are already thinking of getting more girls.
The reason I didn't want to use the old one anymore is that it isn't very secure - I wouldn't trust it to be predator proof overnight, and it's definitely...
We're very close to finishing a new and improved coop, and I'm wondering what we should do with the old one. (it can be seen in the link in my signature)
We built it in our backyard, and it won't fit through the fence, so it will have to be disassembled to get it out of there.
Do you think we...

Thanks for the reply! I don't mind an extension cord running out to the coop, as long as it's safe.
How far from where your girls roost is the heat?
Thanks!
We're in the process of making a new coop right now, and I want it to be set up for heat in the winter and a fan in the summer.
Can you give me some tips on what kind of space i'll need if i want to add a ceramic heat lamp? How many feet away from the chickens it should be, etc?
I'd love to...
Update on the situation:
We are now entering the second day of keeping Clem, the grumpy hen, separate from the other girls. We tried having them together, and she was mean again this morning.
Last night she layed either a very soft shelled egg, or one with only a membrane.
I wonder if this...
I don't think the grumpy chicken is broody - usually she just hides under our deck with her eggs when that is going on.
The only think I can guess is that she's grumpy about the heat.
For today we've got the grumpy chicken locked in the coop and run while the other two are free ranging.
But...
We have 3 hens, but the third seems to be staying out of the fights.
Last night we had petunia in a separate enclosure, but perhaps we'll try having Clementine go on time-out.
Thanks for the ideas - and keep them coming!
Clementine, an Araucania and our oldest hen, has become very aggressive with Petunia, a two-year old barred rock.
Petunia has been getting so picked on, that some feathers have been pulled out and her comb has been bleeding.
We got come Blue-Kote about a week ago and covered Petunia's comb and...
Thanks for the tips. We have been using hay and orchard grass as bedding.
Her crop clearly goes down over night, but by the evenings seems unusually full.
I did put a bit of grit out, just in case, and maybe from now on, i'll stop using the grass based beddings.
Thanks for the tips!
